 Meander 1 - Reading _I have been reading Dragon Song, a long and detailed book about a trincess who has magic in her voice and music. The politics in this book are interesting and very involved. I have hours still read in the trilogy.

Meander 2 0 Thoughts - On Rough drafts when they're involved and take time. Giving a different direction to the fifth book of the Moon Rising series, I will have much to revise during the writing of this book. The new focus can go off base at times.

Meander 4 - Writing - Finished the rough draft and am ready to start the plot and setting draft. Will take time and means a rewriting of the book.

Meander 1 - News - Instead of thoughts, I have some news. Along with ten other authors at my publishers, I've been sent this.

Meander 2 Reading - Have finished reading Mary Jo Putney's Regency romances that I have on my Kindle. I've begun reading Marian Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Have enjoyed both.

Meander 3 Writing - Moving forward and the twists and turns are fun and interesting. Rough draft of Haunted Dreams has only one and a third chapter to write. Then I must begin making sense of all that I've written. Should be interesting and fun.

Tuesday's Inspiration - Back to Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott _Rough Draft #MFRWauthor #aminspired #PDF1

There are some writers who don't experience this part of writing. I am not one of them. In her book Anne Lamott writes about Shitty First Draft. I definitely have written an many of them as I have books published. I just can't help it. Writing a draft that has long trips into what doesn't need to be in the story and putting in things like Love Scene here or fight scene here is my way of creating. Once upon a time I tried not to do this and I failed. If I spent the time polishing the first chapter to perfection I rather forgot how the story was going. Therefore I decided I actually like those rotten first drafts, the one only the writer can see. Yes there are some of those words I've written that will remain when the book is finished. There are some that will be expanded to make sense, or rewritten to get to the meat of the matter.

How about you, do you finish the rough draft and say things like, deep six this whole thing. Back to the drawing board. Though most writers won't admit that their words don't flow smoothly across the pages with no need to do more than a single draft.

For me, getting all the nonsense on the page makes me when I return to draft 2 and probably 3 the story that I thought was shitty becomes a more manageable one and suddenly makes sense. So say to yourself "I must get this out of my system so I can write the book."

More of My Way -- Rough draft

Once I have my six points planned it's time to begin. I start a rough draft feeling sick. Don't ask me why but I know I am never going to get the story down. I take the chapter sketch and then begin with sort of an outline. Then I begin. After doing the opening paragraph about ten times. This is a delaying tactic. My object is to get the story down as fast as I can. This draft is done partly in pen and partly on the computer. Some people do a book in a month and have a lot of pages. I do the rough draft in a day per chapter so my time varies. This is writing only a mother could love. Seriously, there is some dialogue, some stage direction and whole scenes done in one short paragraph or even a single sentence. I might write, they make love her viewpoint or they make love his viewpoint. She finds the body. There is a magical confrontation. Much depends on which genre I'm working on. There are no emotions, very little motivations. This draft probably ends up at about one quarter to one half of the book. Not many people work this way, but it works for me. I must know where I'm headed before I can made the story and the characters work.
The book I'm coming close to finishing began this way to the consternation of my critique group. I've never read them rough draft before. This story also had several changes, sort of major ones, during the rough draft. My hero had an older nasty brother. He remained the same. He had a younger sister who was supposed to be the new pharaoh's wife. Somewhere during the rough draft I knew this wouldn't work. He had to have a younger brother who would not be the pharaoh but something different in another book. This story also started out to be just a single book but during the rough draft this became a trilogy. At the end of the process I had about 25000 words of what looks to end up between 75000 and 80000 words. What I began with is not what I started with but I knew there were other drafts to do where all the problems would be solved.
