Wednesday Search for The White Jewel #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #fantasy #magic #swords

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here   http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from Search for the White Jewel, an epic fantasy

BLURB:

When the Holder of the Yellow Jewel dies, her ward Liara believes she will become the new Yellow Holder. The dying word of the elderly woman astonishes the young woman. She will hold the White Jewel. This fabled gem has been lost for years since her mother and her sister fought and her aunt took hold of the Black Jewel. Liara, accompanied by her foster brother set forth to find the jewel, escaping the soldiers sent by the Queen and Black Jewel Holder. During their escape, Liara meets Valmir who saves her and her foster brother during a shipwreck. During their journey, they meet other holders of the Jewels, including Reena, daughter of the now dead Queen. Though she has the Black Jewel, Reena has no idea how to use the gem.

EXCERPT:

From The Lore of the Jewels

In days long past, just after the world was formed and the people rose from the dust, Mother Sun and the Sister Moons beheld what had been wrought and were troubled by what they saw. For as people moved across the lands, chaos rather than harmony ruled.

"We must bring peace and order." Mother Sun spoke to the pale reflections of herself.

From her depths, she drew molten elements and fashioned them into Jewels. The icy breath of the Sister Moons cooled the gems. To Earda, they were sent and for each Jewel, there was a purpose.

And from the hearts of the six Jewels, light radiated and coalesced to become the White.

Liara closed the Lore of the Jewels. Everyone knew the ruling Jewel was black. And the tale of how the gems were formed was naught but an interesting fable. Her foster mother had given her the book on her last name day. Tana's insistence that she learn the legends puzzled Liara. What use were these mystical tales to one who might never hold a Jewel?

She heard a disturbance in the courtyard and peered through the open window. Several men dismounted. Their steeds were magnificent beasts with burnished horns. Who were these visitors? They looked to be men of importance.

Tana's maid appeared in the doorway. "Milady Holder bids you remain in hiding until her guests leave."

Liara sighed. Twice this lunar, visitors had arrived to see the Yellow Holder. Both times, she had been bidden to keep her presence a secret. Not that she minded missing lessons, of course. The complicated exercises in visualizing had no practical purpose she could see. What bothered her was not being allowed to sit in company and hear about events beyond the keep and the village.

Curiosity gnawed at her thoughts. In hopes of learning more about these unexpected visitors to the High Sanctuary, she hurried down the back stairs and lingered in the shadows near the postern gate. But the men had gone inside before she could hear what they said.

Excitement fluttered like the jeweled wings of a flitter. She was free, at least for the afternoon. She slipped outside and climbed the path beyond the walls of the massive stone tower. Then she broke into a run, deftly avoiding the roots of the gnarled, wind-shaped balsa trees.

A branch caught her kerchief and her hair tumbled free. Inky black strands whipped around her face. Clutching the scarf in her hand, she reached the end of the path. Clusters of multi-hued silk-sheep browsed among the grass and wildflowers.

After breathing deeply of the scented air, she ran across the meadow to the tumble of rocks at the edge of the cliff. She stared at the distant gray tower and peered at the village where the houses resembled pieces from a child's toy. She turned and gazed at the sea and watched white froths of foam roll across the dark blue expanse to dash against the rocky slope.

Wednesday Nilos Moon Rising #MFRWHooks #Pre-order #Epic fantasy #Sword and Sorcery #BWLAuthor

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here   http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from Nilos, Moon Rising and is available for pre-order

Synopsis

Return to the world where Midra and Midran rule. The god and goddess have two faces. Midra is Mistrees on the Moon and also Mistress of the Dark. Midran is Lord of light and Lord of shadows. Rons ago, the Three and Three rose, Seer, Warrior, Healer defeated the Lord of Shadows, though remnants of his worshipers remain. As generations pass in the four nomes of the land only a few remain to honor the Mistress. Once again the followers of Midran prevail, leaving trouble to roil beneath the surface. Prophecies abound and many point to change. Will the Three and Three come again?

In Nilos, Healwomen have become only midwives. Their hodara lies in ruins on the bank of the Nilos River in the city of Memphos. Only a few women come for training and remain in the city. Others serve in the highlands and on the desert. The Eldest, she who rules the midwives, sets upon a scheme fo bring the Three to life and to rule the nome.

What will happen when the Eldest sets her plan into action? Will there be just three women or will they find their opposites becoming the fabled Three and Three? Who will rule the changes to come?

Excerpt: The Eldest arranged for three pregnancies and is sure all the babies will be girls. Here is the first of the births.

She walked to study Mother One. Her eyes were closed. A scrape on the side of her head had been cleaned. The Eldest turned to the women. ‘You can go. I’ll handle this.”

Once they were gone, she donned a smock to protect her clothes, placed her hand on the young woman’s abdomen and felt the strength of the contraction. Good. She slapped the girl’s face. Mother One’s eyes opened. “Stay with me. When I say push, you must obey.”

“I will.” The Eldest could hardly hear the murmured response. She prayed the young woman would remain alert.

The Eldest washed her hands in the herbal scented water. She slid the cutting knife in the water and sat on the stool at the foot of the table and examined the laboring woman.

A scream pierced the air. “Push. Push.” She commanded. Slowly the babe appeared. The Eldest caught and lifted the child. She muffled an angry cry.

A boy. Should be a girl. What now? She cut and bound the cord and placed the child in a basket. After the afterbirth appeared, she drew a deep breath. She knew what she must do.

When the infant cried, she glared. You are misbegotten. She must take care of this one who shouldn’t exist. Could she persuade Mother One to lie with her son again? Failure landed on her shoulder. She placed a hand over the baby’s face.

The curtain rattled. “Eldest, a man from the Voice has arrived and demands you come. His First Woman is in labor. I can send another midwife.”

Relief brought a plan. “I will go.” She wrapped the babe in a blanket and carried him from the room. “I will care for this child in my rooms. I sense a problem. Care for the mother. She’s passed out again. I need a flask of goat’s milk.”

One of the women bustled away. The Eldest walked to her sleeping chamber. The woman handed her the special flask. “Will the child be safe in your room?”

“She will. I will give her medicine so she will sleep.”

The Eldest reached her room. She lifted her large leather pouch from the hook. After feeding the baby several drops of sleeping herbs she tucked him and the milk flask in her midwife’s bag.

Thus equipped she left the house and followed the young servant who waited in the inner court. She smiled as she thought about her problem. If the Voice’s child was a girl she would make the switch. If not, the Voice had two sons.
