Wednesday Divided Dreams #MFRWHooks @BWLAuthor #Contemporary Romance #Gemini #Cancer #Writer #Nurse Practitioner

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is from Divided Dreams where a doctor turned author and a pediatric nurse practitioner learn they are the guardians for an ingant.

Rob Grantlan has given up medicine to become an author. As a Gemini, having two careers seems just right. His quiet days are overturned by the death of his wayward sister and his taking guardianship of his two month old niece. When he learns the father of the infant is his old flame Andi Sherman’s brother a plan unfolds. Years ago, he hurt her. He still loves her and he wants to regenerate that love. Andi Sherman is now a nurse practitioner in Pediatrics. She has vowed never to return to Fern Lake. The offer of a partnership in a friend’s practice is tempting. She refuses until she learns Rob has given up the practice of medicine. She believes he will leave town. On the day after her July birthday, she returns and comes upon the accident, finds the dying woman and the baby. When she learns the little girl is her niece and Rob hasn’t left town she is conflicted. She still loves him but she can’t trust him. News from her brother brings a threat. Will Tammy’s presence in their lives find a way to allow them to love and trust again?

Excerpt:

An ambulance blocked his way. EMTs unloaded a gurney. A third carried an occupied infant seat.

Rob glanced at the swollen face of the woman as the gurney sped past. He stared. Even though her face was bruised he knew her. “Patricia.”

The doors closed. His plans for the day changed. He couldn’t leave until he knew why his sister was here, and why an infant had come with her. He looked toward the drive expecting to see a second ambulance. Had his sister caused another accident? He sucked in a breath and entered the treatment area.

“Dr. Grantlan, can I help you?” a nurse asked.

“The woman who just arrived. She’s my sister. Where is she?”

She pointed to one of the curtained cubicles. Rob drew the cloth aside and viewed the scene. An ED physician issued orders. One nurse slid an IV needle into Patricia’s arm. Another placed a mask and adjusted the flow of oxygen.

Rob gestured to the doctor. “Her name is Patricia Grantlan. What’s her condition?”

The doctor turned. “There’s internal bleeding. Dr. Reed just arrived and we’re taking her to the OR.”

Rob stepped to the gurney. He touched his sister’s hand. “Patricia.”

Her eyelids fluttered open. So did her mouth. The mask muffled her words. He leaned closer.

“Hurts…He did…Take care of…”

A nurse opened the curtain. “They’re ready for her.” She hung a unit of blood and stepped aside.

“Do you want to observe?” the ER doctor asked.

Rob shook his head. “I’ll take care of the paperwork and stay in the ED waiting room to hear the news.”

As they wheeled his sister away Rob strode to the waiting room door. What had Patricia meant by her words? Had someone hurt her? Was she in danger? Who should he care for?

He stopped at the admissions’ desk. “I’m here about the woman who just arrived by ambulance.”

The clerk looked up. “Dr. Grantlan, do you know her? The EMTs had no idea. They found no identification, but they left two suitcases I was about to open.”

“Her name is Patricia Grantlan.” At her startled gasp he continued. “She’s my sister, but I have no idea if she has insurance. I’ll handle the bills.”

She passed a clipboard holding several forms to him. “Fill these out as best as you can.”

Rob retreated to a seat at the rear of the room. He added as much information as he could. After returning the forms the clerk gave him the suitcases. He returned to his seat on one of the plastic chairs facing a television tuned to a cooking show.

A young woman with light brown hair entered. A diaper bag hung from her shoulder. She must be the baby’s mother. Relief rolled like a stream released from a beaver’s dam. Patricia hadn’t caused a fatality. The young woman stopped at the desk.

Who was she? Though curious, knowing wouldn’t halt the thoughts galloping through his head. Something about the way she stood with one hand on her hip drew him and made him think he knew her. Her shorts revealed long tanned legs. Would her face match the rear view?

He groaned. She reminded him of Andi Sherman. Why think of her now? He’d ruined any chance of a future with her. Twelve years ago, he’d followed his father’s demands and told her he didn’t love her. Once more the words spoken in a steel-coated voice slid into his thoughts.

You want to go to college and become a doctor. Though that’s not my choice for you, I’ll accept your decision. Your brother will have the place I reserved for you. Do you want college?

Yes.”

Ditch Andi Sherman. She’s poor white trash. Members of her family are known criminals. Unless you tell her what she is, forget your plans. Forget any inheritance. Your brother will be near your trysting place and will report to me.

He’d followed his father’s orders. Rob still remembered that evening and the tears in her eyes. He swallowed memories of his failure to face his bullying father.

The young woman turned. She studied the rows of waiting people. Her face blanched.

Another from the prolific and multi-talented Janet Lane Walters. This tale is the next part of an on-going series set in a colorful, sexy, dangerous fantasy world which put me in mind of fantasy in the tradition of Conan the Barbarian. Here we have telepathic dragons, who have many magical properties in their enchanted hides and who were my favorite characters. There are also high priestesses, wizards, and warlords all warring with one another, seeking control over the world and seeking to turn the sentient beautiful dragons into mere commodities--their hides have proved to be magically valuable. The heroine is strong, inventive and brave. The hero is a wounded warrior, recovering all his faculties after enslavement as a teen-ager. The villain--well, I'm waiting for him to get his in the next installment. This is very readable and would make a great graphic novel

Relatable characters, comprehensive world building, and of course, dragons make this a fast-paced, fun read.

2019 Book Hooks

Excerpt:
Drakon halted his horse at the end of the pass and stared at the collection of houses and the fields beyond.
Last night he and his companion had ridden well past moonrise so they could reach the village this morning.
Fall had arrived. Reds, yellows and oranges blazed across the hills.
Why had this village remained untouched? Ten years ago, the lord of Sea Cliff had attacked High Peaks
and ravaged the villages closest to the tower. Of the three settlements sworn to High Peaks only this
one remained. The answer had to be treachery.  Drakon wondered if he would learn the names of the traitors.
*You will not,* the Old One said. *They are dead.*
Drakon tightened his hold on the reins. Every time the ancient yellow dragon spoke to him, he felt warmth
and delight. Years ago, his inability to speak to the dragons had doomed him to ten years as a slave.* I wish
they were alive so I could see to their punishment. Their treason made me Lagon’s prisoner and a thing
to be sold to the priestesses.*
*Better a slave than living under the evil one’s control the way the heirs of the other towers do.*
A year had passed since Drakon’s escape from the temple of Fyre. Though he had sworn to see the man
died, the lord of Sea Cliff Tower remained alive. A need for vengeance invaded Drakon’s thoughts. His family,
his near kin and innocent villagers had been slaughtered on that dreadful day.
     *Patience,* the Old One said.
“Behold the lush growth of the fields.” His companion drew his steed to Drakon’s side. “Look at the height
and fullness of the fyrethorns. The harvest will be abundant.” He raked his fingers through his gray-tinged
brown hair.
Drakon shook his head. “I see but do we need all this for one dragon?”
Radlan shrugged. “Who are we to cry about good fortune? There are few dragons in the land. From what I
have heard there are five pair at Sea Cliff and none at the other three towers.”
Drakon’s jaw clenched. His desire for revenge flared anew. If only there was a way to defeat Lagon and
free the High Peaks dragons.
*Have faith. There will be more dragons at our tower.*
Some of Drakon’s tension ebbed. *First patience and now faith. I’ll try. Before I gain those virtues,
there’s a harvest to be completed.* He prodded the steed with his heels and the horse trotted down the
trail into the village.

Code Blue

Join the writers at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  for some great excerpts. Mine is a twist on a medical suspense and a lot about people's obsessions

Blurb

In the medical suspense Code Blue by Janet Lane Walters, published by Books We Love and previously published as Obsessions, nurse Susan finds the body of the hospital’s “gossip queen” in the orthopedic storage room. She doesn’t realize this is the first of a series of murders involving her colleagues or that her life is in danger. She is a widow and is exploring a new romantic relationship that promises love but she fears the man she is falling for is as controlling as her dead husband. The arrival of courtship gifts, at first, seen as innocuous soon takes on a sinister note.

Reviews

This book kept me on edge from the first page to the last. Several times I just 'knew' I'd figured out who the killer was, but each time, there was a bit of doubt there until the very last paragraph! I highly recommend this book. 4 Stars (Excellent!)"--Tracie's Book Reviews by Kathy's Faves and Raves

"A series of murders, suspense, action, a tad of love makes OBSESSIONS an intriguing tale designed to mystify your mind. If you love mysteries, you'll love Janet Lane Walters newest release. 4 Stars!"--Just Views

"Fast-paced mainstream novel ... Walters plots carefully, each scene constructed to perfection. For readers who enjoy being terrified, this is an author to turn to for entertainment. She tells all, while managing to create paranoia among the characters."--Affaire de Coeur

Excerpt: This bit introduces the watcher

His hand brushed Mommy's tombstone. He pressed his fingers against the engraved letters of her name. He cocked his head and listened to the whisper of the wind.

"Nurses give so much to others. Someone should take care of them."
Mommy's husky voice thrummed in a corner of his mind. Her face appeared. Tears spilled from her eyes. He shook his head. Why should he listen to her when she had left him?
Sometimes at night when he slept in her bed, he caught a glimmer of her presence. For fleeting moments, the scent of her perfume brought her to him.
He squared his shoulders. Since he was eight and Daddy died, Mommy had watched him carefully. One day, her vigilance had wavered. The neighborhood bully had fallen from a tree and broken his neck. That awful boy shouldn't have torn up Mommy's flower garden.
Mommy had liked the candy and the other presents he had given her every time he disobeyed. He groaned. Who would like his presents now?
Where was Susan? Waiting made him anxious. She had to come so she would be just like Mommy.
He saw her. Hazel eyes, sad eyes, Susan's eyes, Mommy's eyes. Brown hair swirled to hide her siren smile. He reached for her, but she vanished into the darkness of the night.
The chill November wind flowed across his nape. He jammed his hands into the pockets of his black leather jacket and touched the weapon he had brought.
The sound of leather scuffling against asphalt caused him to turn and scan the parking lot. When he saw no one, his gaze returned to the hospital entrance.
Someone dashed across the street. A flash of white showed beneath the woman's dark coat. He held his breath. Susan had come. It had to be her. A rush of anticipation built to a peak. She was here. The nurse ran up the steps beside the cemetery.
A darting shadow startled him. With stealthy movements, a dark-clad figure edged between the cars. The nurse paused beside a battered tan sedan. A hand stretched to grasp the purse that dangled from her shoulder.
"Susan, watch out." A bellow proclaimed his rage. If she was attacked, he should be the attacker.
Mommy wouldn't like that. "A good boy never hurts a woman." She had never guessed what he had done, not even when he had given her the tri-colored bracelet she had always worn.
     "No," he shouted.
The dark figure fled and nearly tripped over the single strand of chain that separated the parking lot from the cemetery.

Forgotten Dreams (Moonchild Book 5)

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts Mine is my latest release and Book 5 of the Moonchild series.

Blurb:
Chad Morgan is tired of his Hollywood life and his rome as action hero Storm. He's ignoring the contracts for two more movies in the franchise. He wants to take a different direction and make a movie of his friend's book. He has bought the rights. But his agent and the studio want more Storm. His personal life is also bouncing from one woman to another. His thoughts have turned to Emma Grassi, the woman he left behind in his quest for fame. He decides to return to Fern Lake and speak to his friend and renew his friendship with Emma.

Emma is now a nurse practitioner sharing an office with her doctor friend. She has waited for Chad to return and has decided this isn't going to happen. She's decided to confront him and put an end to the dream she has remembered and he has forgotten. Life takes a twist when Chad's auto accident on the outskirts of Fern Lake bring them together. She wants out. He wants in.

Excerpt:

Chad Morgan leaned against the wall near the French doors leading to the garden of the ball room. The scent of June roses drifted on the breeze. A distant hum of traffic rumbled beneath the pop songs played by the band. Dark clouds played tag across the moon carrying the promise of a coming storm. His thoughts approached another kind of storm, one burning in his gut.
Tonight was his to savor but the taste was sour. The celebration of his latest flick bored him. His body ached from the day’s six hour workout to keep his body fit for another action adventure as the unbeatable Storm. The fourth of the franchise his agent and the studio hoped would never end had been released today.
Music blared the latest tunes along with the series’ theme song. Couples gyrated to the pounding beat. Women wearing glittering gowns and men in dark tuxes turned like fragments of glass in a kaleidoscope. He released a breath. Just another Hollywood party.
In a silent salute, Chad raised his glass and sipped. He welcomed the burn of rum and cola. His drink and Storm’s favorite. Nothing effete about the kick ass hero, his way with women and his ability to hold his alcohol. What no one knew produced a chuckle. Unlike his on screen persona, the glass he held contained the first and last of the night.
He watched a curvaceous blonde weave her way among the dancers headed in his direction. She paused to lift a glass of champagne from a strolling waiter. Her top shimmered beneath the lights. The low swoop of the neckline barely covered her nipples.
Chad sipped again. He should know her…Her name was Mindy, Mandy, Bimbo. Just one of the latest crop of aspiring starring ladies who managed to attend every important party. She glided closer.
“Hiding in plain sight?” Her husky whisper left him cold.
“Observing,” he said.
His laughter raised a groan. “What do you see?”
He could answer with the truth but he wouldn’t. Truth wasn’t needed tonight. What he saw was false laughter, pretense and boring people. He looked past her. “The same thing I see at similar affairs. What’s your pleasure?” He had an idea but he wanted to hear her ploy.
Her smile held a promise he didn’t want. She ran her hand along his arm. “I’m tired of secondary roles.” She sucked in a deep breath and nearly exposed her nipples. “I hear there’s another Storm movie being cast.” Her fingers reached his shoulder. “You could let people see the chemistry between us. That’s how your last leading lady did.” She touched his lips. “I’m available.”
“Did Cindy really do that? I never guessed.” He fought the urge to laugh. Cindy’s agent and his had orchestrated the romance that had only been in the papers not in life.
He spotted the man he’s avoided all evening. Though he didn’t want to speak to Gregson, the man’s presence would chase this opportunistic female away. He stepped away. “Speak to your agent. Perhaps he can arrange a reading. Mine is on the way. He wants to talk.”
She pulled a card from her cleavage. “Give me a call. I promise you won’t be sorry.”
Gregson arched an eyebrow. “A new conquest? Time for some promo ops and rumors.”
Chad shook his head. “She wants to star in my next movie. Not happening.”
His slender, blond agent smiled. “Shame. You tempted?”
“Not interested. What’s on your mind?”
“You need to sign the contracts for Storm five and six. They want to start filming in September.”
Chad released the breath he held. “I need a break. I’m tired of being typecast.” Before the four Storm films, there had been spots in three other action films. He pointed to a trio of babes headed in their direction. “I’m also tired of being a chick magnet.”
Gregson scowled. “Goes with the territory. Think photo op.”
“Not the kind of life I want anymore.”
“What you want and what the studio demands shows you’re not reading the right script. Do number five and six and they might give you a chance to do something else. It’s the money, my friend. You opened in the top spot world wide this weekend. You need to keep doing what you do best.”
Anger bubbled closer to the surface. Chad feared erupting like Old Faithful. “I’m sick of Storm. I’m tired of kicking ass. I’m fed up doing the same scene with slight variations again and again. I want to do Rob’s book. You said the script was great.”
Gregson’s hand landed on Chad’s shoulder. “Not your style. I’ve shopped the idea. Had some interest but not with you in the lead role. Two more Storms and you’ll be on your way to the bank with millions. In two years we’ll ask again.”
In one long swallow, Chad finished the drink. He slapped the glass into Gregson’s hand. “In two years I’ll be dead from boredom.” He stepped out into the dark night.
“Let me know when you’re ready to toe the line,” Gregson called. “You know you will.”
Chad strode to his car. He wasn’t toeing any line, not as Storm. Hollywood no longer held the glamour he’d embraced ten years ago when he’d arrived. He could have chosen a different road. His athletic abilities could have earned him a college scholarship but the acting virus had invaded his life. Four years of drama in high school and multiple roles in the local theater group had brought him here.
He’d followed that dream but there had been other dreams. Could he find them again? Smiling chocolate eyes in a lovely face surrounded by dark curls flashed in his thoughts. Had she found a dream different from the one they’d shared and he’d forgotten? He slid behind the wheel and drove to his large and lonely home behind stone walls. There were decisions to be made but not tonight. He would remember her…Emma.
In an unusual move, the moment he reached the house, he mixed a second rum and cola.

He decides to leave home, meets Tira and joins her in the search for the symbols of the rule. Will his aid bring good fortune and will their growing love keep them from making a fatal mistake?

Previously published as The Warrior of Bast

"This engaging voyage into an ancient Egypt that includes power-hungry priests and hazardous treasure hunts entertains from page one. Familial intrigue heightens the tension, as does a kidnapping or two. The cast of characters is dynamic and complements the well-conceived plot." ~ 4 Stars, Susan Mobley, Romantic Times Magazine

Excerpt:

Though those words brought a lessening of Kashe’s tension, the odds against him were eight to one. Still he intended to fight. The first of the attackers sped toward him. Kashe waited until the man’s intentions were clear. He slashed with his knife and a line of blood appeared on the enemy’s chest. The man howled and retreated. Kashe moved to the side in an attempt to prevent being encircled. He ducked a swung club. The dodge saved him from a knife wielder. Instead of Kashe the club bashed the man with the knife.
A cat yowled. An eerie shout answered. For a moment the attackers froze. A stranger kicked one of the enemies beneath the chin. An ally, Kashe thought. Another attacker charged the new arrival. In a blur the man flew through the air and slammed against the street. Kashe evaded a fist and dove forward. He connected with an attacker’s stomach. His ally faced another of the enemy and slashed the side of a hand against the man’s throat. Before long the eight river men sprawled on the ground.
Kashe drew a deep breath and turned to thank his ally. He stepped over fallen bodies. “Don’t know who you are or where you came from but you have my thanks.”
“No problem. You were in trouble.”
His eyes widened. The new arrival was a tall beautiful woman. Her skin was a warm brown several shades darker than his. Black hair, clipped short, formed tight curls. Her eyes were as dark as night. Her gaze filled with desire.
She strode toward him. Her eyes glittered and he saw her beaded nipples press against her breast band. His body responded to her scent. He was primed and she seemed willing.
He pulled her into his arms and pressed his mouth against hers. The touch felt as hot as the growing season’s sun at midday. He cupped her rear. The aroma of sweat and woman surrounded him. Her nipples tightened against his chest. She fit against him perfectly.
She slid her arms across his shoulders and stroked the skin beneath his warrior’s braid. He slipped a hand under the edge of her kilt and pressed her closer. With his teeth he tugged on her lower lip and gained entrance to her mouth. His engorged member throbbed with an urgent need for release.
The cat yowled again. Horu Ka screeched. Awareness of where he was and what he’d been about to do slammed into Kashe. He drew a deep breath and released her.
     “Don’t stop,” she murmured.
He didn’t want to let her go but continuing wasn’t for here and now. “Not a good idea. The river men are stirring. We must go.”
She drew a deep breath. “You’re right.” She moved away and retrieved a bundle.

As she slid her arms through the straps moonlight glinted on the amulet she wore. Kashe examined the medallion. “Are you one of Bast’s warriors?”

Alex mentioned name after name until they reached the tall brunette at the end of the desk. Her lab coat marked her as the unit’s nurse manager.
“Caleb, Jenessa Bradshaw, Acting Nurse Manager. Her husband is Director of Nursing.”
“Glad to meet you,” Caleb said. “Sorry about the grand entrance.”
She laughed. “You said what we were thinking.”
“Don’t encourage him,” Alex said. “Half the girls in high school followed him around.”
“The other half followed you.” Caleb turned to Jenessa. “Why are you just acting nurse manager?”
“Our newly hired one was to start two months ago but a family emergency intervened. She’s starting on Monday.”
     “She must be special.”
“She is. She’s a nurse practitioner.”
     “I’m impressed.”
Jenessa smiled. “Let me give you a quick tour.”
Caleb walked beside her. “Is the name of this new nurse a secret?”
“I forgot you weren’t here during the selection process. She’s a friend from my class at Grantley.”
Alex nodded. “She’s one of the infamous Grantley Gang. You were seldom home back then to know about their antics.” He turned to Jenessa. “Are we holding a welcoming party to celebrate the event?”
“I would tell you to ask your wife but just the Gang minus Rick,” Jenessa said. “She’ll be tied up at Rehab getting her brother settled.”
Caleb halted. “Just who is this person?”
“Suzanna Rollins,” Jenessa said. “She worked at City.”
Caleb held in a groan. Not her. Not here. He prayed his face didn’t show his feelings. Of all the women in the world to invade his space. Suzanna Rollins had no use for him. Their days of dating hadn’t ended well.
     “Do you know her?”
Caleb shrugged. “I may have seen her a time or two.” Or more. They had dated for several months until the night he’d asked her to give up her job and move in with him. All her expenses would be paid. All she had to do was warm his bed.

His cheek still stung with the memory of her reaction. She’d walked away. He’d managed to avoid her and leaped at the chance to spend three months in London on Respiratory Problems in Children seminar.

The Cancer-Capricon Connection (Opposites in Love Book 4) by [Lane-Walters, Janet]
Join the other authors in a blog hop here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  My offering is The Cancer Capricorn Connection, Opposites in Love. To view visit http://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com
She’s a Cancer and he’s a Capricorn. She has a secret she wants to keep but moments after they meet again, he realizes that her daughter is his, and he wants to be part of their life.

Memories of the past and her hurt brings Cate’s old anger back to the surface but Rick realizes what a fool he was in his single-minded desire to follow his dream. He now has the medical degree he desired enough to set his love for Cate aside. His guilt and her anger clash as they try to find ways to show their daughter how much they love her.

EXCERPT:

Cate closed her eyes lest her friend see the sorrow and anger ever present in her thoughts. She’d lost her chance for a full life when he’d left ten minutes after the graduation ceremony ended without a goodbye. She hadn’t been able to tell him about the pregnancy and she’d been too angry to call him.
“I’m content without a man in my life.” She smiled. “Maddie is great company.”
“She won’t be with you forever.”
“I know but right now I’m content.”
Lauren walked to the kitchen door. “What a great swing set. I’m glad you found someone to set it up. Keeps the kids from trying to help.”
“Bought it in town yesterday morning and the set up was part of the price.” Cate joined her friend. She studied the massive structure. There were swings, a seesaw, and an overhead grill for climbing with a play house on the opposite side from the slide. “Maddie picked this two years ago. Wouldn’t fit in a city apartment.”
Lauren touched Cate’s shoulder. “I’m sorry I never heard about your mother’s death. Mail was often lost as I wandered from country to country.”
“Don’t feel bad about not knowing.” Cate turned from the door. “The kitchen is in order. I wonder how the others are doing?”
Lauren laughed. “Liz is organized and efficient. About Megan and Jenessa, think chaos. One will undo what the other has done. Megan wants color coordination. Jenessa just wants to finish.”
A picture of her two friends formed. “Megan will have a good time finding towels that match.” A sound caused her to turn.
Liz stepped into the room. “Dining room and study are done. Books are shelved. Do you ever read for fun?”
