Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Black and White or Gray #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Plot ##Black or White #Gray

What we tend to do is try to fit everyone and every action into black or white. The good guys or the bad guys. It's easier to root for the hero and this works well in action stories and how we all want to root for the good guys to defeat the bad ones. While this can make for an exciting story after awhile, reading this kind of story again and again becomes boring. That brings us to shades of Gray.

Making the hero of the story being less that perfect adds to his character. Making the villian have some good traits adds a bit of depth to a story. I used this in one of my stories by having the villain have a deep though obsessive love for his mother and also his willing to volunteer. This added depth to his character and also made the other characters not see what he war really like. So build a bit of a flaw into your characters be the heroes, heroines or villains. Those shades of gray will add depth to the story and make the characters battles stronger.
