The Temptation Plot is featured as Tuesday's Writer' Tip #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #Plot #Temptation

Temptation can be small ofr huge. When using this as a plot for a story, the temptation has to be a strong one. Cheating on a died is a small temptation unlessit's a matter of death for the tempted person. When designing this plot, the writer must judge the strength of the temptation. Atemptation to do something wrong or illegal can make for a great book/ When deciding to use this type of plot, the writer must think of the temptation, the person doing the tempting. Characters are important in this kind of a plot and the opening must show the charcter being tempted and some of the reasons he or she might fall for the wrong doing.

Talking About writing with a reluctant character with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #mystery #short story #illness

Katherine Miller is my character in a series of mysteries. Six books later and Katherine asked to retire to enjoy her life. Then I was asked to produce another story. After many quarrels with Katherine, we decided to start a book. The planning don and myhealth took a nose dive and I was forced to put the story aside for a time. When I returned to writing six weeks later, Katherine was stubborn. The story had begun and I was in tune with the character but the story ended as a short story. I sent it off to my publisher with hopes she could come up with ways to make it longer. This didn't happen so a number of the short stories that started me on my writing career were added to make the story longer. The one thing I'll say is I learned something wwhile typing the stories into the manuscript. The stories were good and if the short story market hadn't gone soft, I would never have written novels. The comment from a magazine editor sent me to turn to mysteries and Murder and Mint Tea, a short story became Katherine's first adventure. So Murder and Iced Tea is her last. There will be other mysteries and also some romances to come.

Confronting the Wizards of Erda is featured today on Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #fantasy #all ages #light romance

Much is demanded of a Healer and inner peace is her only reward. She must seek neither power nor wealth. To walk in the Way is difficult and not all who try will succeed.

When a Healer names a man as Chosen, she must leave the House for she must think only of her craft and those who need her care. If she elects to depart, her knowledge of the healing arts will be stripped from her mind. She will be left with only those skills known to commoners who do not follow the Way.

Jindera left the herb storage hut and strode toward the cottage. Clouds dimmed the morning sun, then slid away. The leaves of the oka trees rustled in the summer breeze and the mingled scents of herbals and seasonings swirled around her. The coming of clouds meant a storm approached, but she felt certain no rain would fall this day.

Would the medicinals she would brew from the herbals she’d selected be of any help? She could only hope. All night, she’d fought the fever raging through her mother’s body and had seen no change.

“Mama, why did you leave the Healers’ House?”  Her mother could have remained and raised her children with the sons and daughters of the other Healers. On his tenth birthday, Jindera’s twin would have been sent to his father. But Jindera’s mother had chosen to leave. Love for a man had been her reason.

Tears blurred Jindera’s sight. She had loved her father dearly. His death seven lunars before had brought sadness to a home where love had ruled.

Rays of sunlight glinted on the golden stones of the cottage and brightened the dull yellow of the thatch. Jindera hurried along the garden paths that meandered among the beds of herbals and seasonings.

The plants flourished. Lajin’s touch, she thought. Her brother had only to tend any ailing plant and it thrived. She paused at the cottage door and peered along the road from the village. Her twin should return soon with the staples he’d gone to fetch.

The stench of illness pervaded the room where her mother lay on a narrow cot. Jindera’s breath caught. For a moment, she thought her mother had left this plane without the blessing to release her.

Holding back a sob, Jindera fled to the kitchen to blend a fever potion. She carried the mug of steaming liquid to the sick room and spooned the medicinal into her mother’s mouth. A drop or two fell on the linen sheet and spread like the tears Jindera held inside. She inhaled deeply. She had to hold grief and fear at bay. When the mug was empty, she rested her head on the edge of the mattress and prayed the remedy would work.

She jerked awake. How long had she slept? The light in the room told her ‘twas near midday.

The rasp of labored breathing filled her ears. She felt her own breaths fall into the same pattern. She raised her head and turned toward the door. Where was Lajin? She tried to reach him on the inner path where they could speak in secret. Flight. Fear. What had happened to him? Her hands and body shook. His fear or hers?

Jindera rose and looked outside. The fragrant scents of the garden brought a welcome calmness to her troubled spirit. ‘Twas a false hope. If Mama dies, what will Lajin and I do? Having but sixteen years, they weren’t old enough to hold the land.

She heard a rasping cough and turned back to the cot. Her mother’s eyes were open. A wave of hope spread through Jindera. “Mama.”

“Leave. You. Lajin.  Go soon. Danger comes.”

Excerpt:

Maude, There’s A Body on The Lawn

“What’s a nice girl like me doing in a dump like this?” Maude Forest laughed. At her age, thinking of herself as a girl was foolish, but describing her present domicile as a dump said it all. She shifted position on the moth-eaten sofa and grabbed her cell phone. Maybe her best friend had returned from her latest jaunt. Maude was in dire need of diversion. Why would a self-made millionaire want to find his roots? She looked at the faded, water-stained wallpaper and prayed her husband of thirty-five years would come to his senses. He’d dragged her to this farmhouse on the edge of nowhere because his father, grandfather, and who knows how many greats had lived here. What was wrong with a cruise or a visit to Broadway? Even a golfing vacation would have been more fun. No, George had to see the home of his ancestors, his unexpected inheritance and the place his mother had fled when he was a few months old.

She dialed a familiar number and heard her friend’s voice. “Sue Ellen, regale me with tales of civilization.”

Sue Ellen Pinewood laughed. “The Parker wedding was a gross extravaganza.”

 “Was I missed?”

“Absolutely. Without your caustic comments, I was bored. Let me tell you about the dust-up at the Women’s Club luncheon.”

The phone crackled. Maude couldn’t hear her friend.

“Sue Ellen, are you there?” “Sorry. My driver hit a rut. Where was I?”

 “At the Women’s Club.”

While Sue Ellen gave a blow by blow, Maude felt envy blossom like the roses on the trellis outside the window. She’d give almost anything to walk on concrete instead of dirt, but budging George was impossible.

“Ma, Ma, git out here,” George bellowed.

 “I’m not your mother.”

Sue Ellen chuckled. “Is Ma his new pet name?”

Maude sighed. “Since he’s in the hills, he’s turned us into Ma and Pa Kettle.

 “Where are you?”

“Midway between Luke and Stumpy Point.”

Sue Ellen giggled. “So when will you be home?”

“Who knows when Pa Kettle will find the roots his mother severed when she left his father.”

“Have you done anything interesting?”

Maude rolled her eyes. “We appeared at a strawberry festival. Shame I’m allergic.”

The Underdog Plot Part 3 is featured as Tuesday's Writer's Tip #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writing #Plot #Underdog

The ending part of the Underdog Plot shows the underdog character gaining his or her goals. This character succeeds against the odds and the reader cheers. The consequences of the win must be shown. Make sure things are shown to be against the character winning throughout the story. The win then will leave the readers cheering.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #writing #thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Reading a lot of different books. A Mary Balogh I haven't read before and enjoyed. A pairof rather innocents are married and they must learn to live with each other. Alo now reading an Andre Norton I never read before - this is almost a Gothic.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - The Reps are foolishly trying to do some research to find something the current president has done that could be imoeacheable. Problem is one of their committee says there's nothing. We all know why this is being done. Not to find a crime but to invent one to make him look bad and the real bad guy less awful. Fools. They have done nothing to govern the country and sure hope they all lose their places in our next elections. I definitely will not vote for the current rep from my area.

Meander 3 - Writing - Have started the rough draft of the Horror Writer's Demise. Going slow but always does when one begins a new project. One day, it will take off an them I'll have to go back and write the first few chapters again but not until I reach the end and can go back to the beginning.
