Melodic Dreams #MFRWHooks #BWLAuthor #romance #contemporary #music #occupational therapy

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts Mine is at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com and is from Melodic Dreams'

BLURB:

When Maria and a child she says is his arrives on Jay’s doorsteps, he is in the middle of composing a musical. Though the four year old has his eyes, Jay can’t be sure this isn’t a scam.

He believes his dead wife took steps to rid herself of the child. A need for his assistance to help with childcare while she works is Maria’s reason for arriving in Fern Lake. She also believes her nephew should know his father.

Can Jay accept and learn to love his child and deal with the attraction to a woman who physically looks like his dead wife? Can Maria deal with his trust issues and a threat from her own family?

Excerpt:

To the sounds of her nephew banging notes on a xylophone, Maria emptied the last box of kitchenware she’d found at the thrift shop less than a block from the apartment complex. She paused and laughed. She knew that song, the theme from Jeopardy, her mother’s favorite program.

She drew a deep breath. So much to do to make this one bedroom apartment into a home for her four year old nephew. Beds to make, clothes to unpack. She needed to buy curtains to cover the blinds and add color to the ecru walls. She’d been fortunate that the woman from the Human Resources Department at Fern Lake General had found this place.

Last night, she and Jamie had slept on the green carpet in the living room pretending to be camping. This morning the furniture and other purchases from the thrift shop had been delivered.

Jamie finished his rendition with a sweep of the hammer over the keys. She leaned against the counter and loaded their bowls from lunch into the dishwasher.

Maria drew a deep breath. Inside, she quivered with tension she refused to allow to show. She must succeed.

Enough dawdling. There was a man she needed to see. Her gut clenched.

“Jamie, put your toys away. We’re going to see your father.” And pray the man agrees to pay for Jamie’s pre-school while she worked. Two weeks from today, she started at the local hospital as an occupational therapist.

“Will he like me?” Jamie asked.

She hated the worry in the boy’s voice and in his brilliant green eyes. She ruffled his dark curls. “What’s not to like?”

“He never came to see me.”

Maria sucked in a breath. She could have tried to locate the man years ago, but her mother had been adamantly opposed. “He didn’t know about you. Nana didn’t know his last name.” Maria brushed hair from her face. They could have learned. She couldn’t tell Jamie about his grandmother’s anger. Guilt curled in her thoughts.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip Plot and Story #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing

What does Plot have to do with Story? when our children are small they like to hear stories. We usually read from a book and sometimes we tell them a story from our childhood. What is the difference here? So let's look at what Story is.

A story is like a necklace of beads with each been being an incident in life. Story needs curiosity about what happens next. So story is about incidents causing the hearer to wonder what comes next.

What does Plot add to the story? Plot brings why into the recital. Why did this event happen? Plot brings the reader into questioning and wanting to know why the event happened. Plot means remembering what has already happened and  figuring the why for the reactions of the characters in the story. This leads to the outcome.

Meabdering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #NFRWAuthor #Reading #writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading _ Am now reading Jo Beverley's Regency series again Books are great but Christmas Angel is my favorite. There are so many points of humor.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Once again the unfairness of things is show, A special person to view the stolen documents seems to me to be not good. But them the judge was appointed by him. I wonder what he did with all those documents and I fear he did damage to our country. I still can's imagine why so many people in red states were fools to elect him. But then I have never seen him as anything but a jerk.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am over half way through the major rewrite of Seppal. Will surely finish by the end of the month and will be able to move to the final drafts of the book. November is coming.

Sunday's Book Toth's Priest #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #paranormal #alternate ancient Egypt #romance #magic

When she is offered the chance to be sent to an ancient Egypt, she accepts even though she must perform a task and risk losing her life. But here, she faces the same fate. She arrives and there is much she must learn before she can rescue a young man held by the priests of Aken Re.

Namose was taken prisoner by Hebu, beloved of Aken Re, and forced to translate ancient scrolls giving Hebu some of the powers given to the priests of Toth by the Three of the Two Lands, Toth, Bast and Horu. After his rescue, further troubles arise. He and Amara must join their powers to save their land and friends from the evil Hebu.

A teen age girl in desperate circumstances flees into an alternate past, hoping to find a better life. Here she steps into another, just as dangerous, world, one of magicians, rival gods and spell-casting. This is the final book in a YA series set in an alternate past—Ancient Egypt. There is plenty of action, brave young characters, twists and turns, all set in well-researched ancient setting. Egypt, all by itself, is sufficiently interesting for many readers, but here the “alternate” adds a bit more spice. The names of real history players and gods are here, slightly changed.

In her contemporary life, Amaa is an orphan, raised grudgingly by her uncle and threatened with rape by two men. When given a chance by two women skilled in magic to travel back in time to ancient Egypt, she accepts.
Namose wants to become a priest of the god Toth but is captured and forced to follow the dictates of an alien god and to translate scrolls of that god.
"Toth's Priest" tells of Amara's and Namose's adventures and growing love for each other. This book was obviously well-researched and is full of action. For those reasons, I gave it a 5 star rating. However, the sentences didn't show much variation and often read monotonously. I would have liked to see a bit more narrative interspersed with the dialogue.
Neverlheless, this is a great adventure and worthwhile read.

Friday Augustina Vanhoven is visiting and talking about her latest release #MFRWAuthor #supernatural suspense #research

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

The book I’d like to feature is the second book in my supernatural suspense series, Cursed. The story is set in the mythical town of Dante’s Hallow, Maine. The year is 1880. A sailor is attacked by a werewolf, becomes infected and begins attacking animals before starting in on humans. It’s up to Nick Harwood and the rest of the team to stop the threat without revealing the supernatural world to the citizens of the area.

2. Where did the idea arise?

I loved the television show Supernatural. I wanted to write something that was a salute to the show but not a copy. The wish gave birth to The Eldritch Series. Each novella releases in the fall in time for Halloween.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

I researched what things were like in 1880. Do trains run in the area where I placed the story? How does a cannery process fish? I also had to study herbs to find out what they do. I did a lot of research into myths and legends about the supernatural. I pretty much stayed on point with the research for this book.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

It took a little over three months to write the book.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I’ve been writing since elementary school, short stories and poems. My first book was published in 2014. My sun sign is Cancer.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I write time travel romance, paranormal romance, futuristic romance, supernatural suspense, and I’m currently working on romantic suspense.

7. Where on the internet can you be found?

Shattered Dreams #MFRWHooks @BWLAuthor #Romance #contemporary #medical #doctor #nurse

The authors at #MFRWHooks found here  http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com  have some great excerpts. Mine is found at https://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com  Shattered Dreams forces the hero and heroine to face past events and seek a future.

Blurb:

Torn apart years ago by lies and threats, Rafe Marshall returns to town and confronts Manon Lockley. She has been told he died on the night he stood her up for their senior prom.

When she faints, Rafe catches her and realizes he hasn’t stopped loving her. Manon carries anger and now grief that wasn’t real. Rafe wants her in his life, but she doesn’t want to talk about what happened in the past. She can’t be sure if her father or someone else told lies about Rafe and she doesn’t want to know. Can Rafe persuade her to listen? Not without a battle.

Excerpt:

Manon Lockley parked in the driveway of the small yellow brick ranch house she’d converted into an office for her medical practice. She slid from the driver’s seat and paused to inhale the fragrance of the June roses.

At the moment she felt like the White Rabbit. She was very late for office hours. Mrs. Patton, director of nursing at Fern Lake General had been admitted to the hospital this morning with chest pain. As her primary physician, Manon had remained to monitor the older woman’s condition and to work with the cardiologist to stabilize the hospital’s most admired employee.

Manon glanced at her watch. Well past three. How long would she need to stay? Her stomach grumbled reminding her she hadn’t eating lunch. Exhaustion caused by the emergency made her shoulders slump under the weight of the event.

She opened the door leading to the reception area. Hopefully her nurse/secretary had been able to reschedule the patients for another day.

The rumble of a motorcycle sounded in the distance. Her muscles tightened. Her fists clenched. Her heart pounded in an erratic rhythm. The roar of a bike never failed to flood her with memories she didn’t want. Those memories had been shattered years ago and still filled her with anger and grief.

Do not go there.

After sucking in a series of cleansing breaths, she entered and paused at the reception desk. The cheerful yellow walls brightened her mood. She glanced into the waiting room and saw just two people seated on the brown leather chairs. Manon smiled. Two to four patients was better than the dozen plus who had been scheduled.

Emma hung up the phone. “Finally.”

Manon nodded. “It’s been quite a day. Things here.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - What is Plot #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #writing #Plot

After one has an idea for a story and has developed a group of fascinating characters, the time has come to consider Plot. Characters of interest are important to a story but there also has to be a map to drive these characters to their destination. This is plot.  We've all told stories about incidents that have happened to us. We've also read about true stories that may seem unbelievable. Plot is what makes these stories believable.

Plot is the bones that are assembled in a perfect order to hold the story together. A plot is just a plan is xomething I heard years ago from a writer and it's been part of my writing process. I am plot orientated and I generally see the bones before I give life to the characters.

Plot is a writer's tool and a process to follow the beginning to the end. Removing one element needed will make the story colapse. Many times, I've had to go back and look at the parts of the story and make sure they're positively expressed.

Sometimes plot is like the pieces of a puzzle that have to be fitted into place. If one of the pieces is out of place, the puzzle remains unsolved. So when a writer dreams up a story, the pieces need to fit so the jigsay becomes a real picture.
