The Leo Aquarius Connection is featured on Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #Leo #Aquarius #medical #astrological

As Caleb Winstone rode the elevator to the fifth floor of Eastlake Community, the familiar aromas shouting hospital engulfed him. Though slightly different from the scents of his last placement, they smelled of coming home. Exhaustion threatened to swamp him but he had places to visit and things to accomplish before he sought sleep.

The indicator flashed five. The doors parted and he stepped out to face the nurses’ station. A half dozen women stared and collectively sighed.

“Enter the handsome doctor.”

Gasps and giggles greeted him.

Caleb felt his face heat. Had he really said that? He considered a strategic retreat but the elevator doors had closed. Though he’d been called handsome often enough, he had no reason for the blatant announcement.

A burst of male laughter interrupted his swirling thoughts. “Hello, Caleb. You certainly know how to make an entrance.” A tall blond man rounded the end of the desk and offered his hand,

“Alex Carter, good to see you again.”

Alex clasped his hand. “Are you in town for good?”

“Looks that way. I’ve joined Joe Grogan’s practice.” Caleb grinned. “Blame my announcement on jet lag. Arrived this morning from London where I spent three months studying respiratory diseases in children.”

“Have you been home?”

Caleb shook his head. “Came straight here. Decided to complete the paperwork and get my parking pass and then go to the office before I go home. I’m meeting Joe at one thirty at the office. Actually, I’m in no hurry to reach the stone mansion.”

Alex nodded. “Are they still upset over your career choice?’

“Naturally. They equate my straying from the financial sphere as a betrayal like they did when I chose swimming over football in high school.”

“Shame. Let me introduce you to today’s crew.” Alex walked to the desk.

The nurses smiled. Were they hiding laughter? He felt sure his appearance and words would make the rounds.

Alex grinned. “Ladies, this is Caleb Winstone, the newest addition to our staff. He’s joining Dr. Joe and vying for the handsome doctor award.”

Caleb shook his head. Years ago Alex had been a tease. His first wife’s behavior had soured him. The second marriage had brought a welcome change. “I’ll get you.”

Alex mentioned name after name until they reached the tall brunette at the end of the desk. Her lab coat marked her as the unit’s nurse manager.

“Caleb, Jenessa Bradshaw, Acting Nurse Manager. Her husband is Director of Nursing.”

“Glad to meet you,” Caleb said. “Sorry about the grand entrance.”

She laughed. “You said what we were thinking.”

“Don’t encourage him,” Alex said. “Half the girls in high school followed him around.”

“The other half followed you.” Caleb turned to Jenessa. “Why are you just acting nurse manager?”

“Our newly hired one was to start two months ago but a family emergency intervened. She’s starting on Monday.”

“She must be special.”

“She is. She’s a nurse practitioner.”

“I’m impressed.”

Jenessa smiled. “Let me give you a quick tour.”

Caleb walked beside her. “Is the name of this new nurse a secret?”

“I forgot you weren’t here during the selection process. She’s a friend from my class at Grantley.”

Alex nodded. “She’s one of the infamous Grantley Gang. You were seldom home back then to know about their antics.” He turned to Jenessa. “Are we holding a welcoming party to celebrate the event?”

“I would tell you to ask your wife but just the Gang minus Rick,” Jenessa said. “She’ll be tied up at Rehab getting her brother settled.”

Caleb halted. “Just who is this person?”

“Suzanna Rollins,” Jenessa said. “She worked at City.”

Caleb held in a groan. Not her. Not here. He prayed his face didn’t show his feelings. Of all the women in the world to invade his space. Suzanna Rollins had no use for him. Their days of dating hadn’t ended well.

“Do you know her?”

Caleb shrugged. “I may have seen her a time or two.” Or more. They had dated for several months until the night he’d asked her to give up her job and move in with him. All her expenses would be paid. All she had to do was warm his bed.

His cheek still stung with the memory of her reaction. She’d walked away. He’d managed to avoid her and leaped at the chance to spend three months in London on Respiratory Problems in Children seminar.

The Leo Aquarius Connection is feature as Sunday's Book #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #medical #astrological

The nurses stare as he exits the elevator on the Pediatric Unit. “Enter the handsome doctor.” Those are Doctor Caleb Winstone’s words as he steps off the elevator. Though he’s embarrassed, this Leo doctor rolls with the punches.

He’s returned home to join an older doctor in the practice. Before long he learns the new nurse manager of the unit is a woman he knows. Of all the women in the world, she is the last one he wants to see. How can he manage to work daily with her? Before the day ends, he discovers his mother has decided who he should marry and the woman is quite willing. Not for him.

Suzanna Rollins is an Aquarian and now the guardian of her half-brother who was badly injured in a car accident. She takes the position as nurse manager of the Pediatric unit for several reasons. One is the move from the city re-unites her with college friends, the Grantley Gang. The other is for the excellent Rehab Center. On the day of her arrival, she encounters Caleb. What is he doing here and why? Can she work with the man she fell in and out of love with the night he offered her less than marriage?

Caleb’s interest in helping her half-brother gives them more together time than they imagined.

Walters demonstrates her knowledge of hospitals to make the story real, but does so skillfully without slowing down the read. For Dr. Caleb Winstone returning home means more than a new job and an awkward encounter, it also means his parents incessant demands for him to marry the woman of their choice. Nurse Practitioner Suzanna Rollins hopes the move will help her brother whose healing from a car accident. To me some unresolved issues cost it a star, but it is still a worthwhile read and I recommend it and the other books in the series.

Handsome, rich doctor Caleb is expected to marry a woman of status. Years earlier he fell for a nurse then asked her to become his mistress. She slapped him and left. Suzanna is a hard-working nurse who must now care for her brother who was badly injured in a car wreck. She takes a job at a different hospital to have access to their excellent rehab program. Too late she finds out that Caleb has transferred to the same hospital and now he's her brother's doctor.
The two clash, but Caleb grows close to the teenaged brother. Will he ignore his parents' wishes and pursue the only woman he's ever loved, Suzanna? Will Suzanna give him a second chance?
Ms. Walter's writes with smooth authority, giving her characters heart and strength. A beautifully written story about opposites and compromise-the workings of a hospital-and the choices we all must face.

The Cancer Capricorn Connection is featured with Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #Medical #astrological #hidden child

Cate Rollins stood in the sun-filled kitchen of the house she’d rented and opened another box. The cheery yellow walls and the dark oak cabinets made the large room seem cozy. Yesterday she and her daughter had arrived in mid-afternoon and blessed her friend for leaving most of the furniture. She’d brought little of the battered furniture from the apartment.

The sound of children’s laughter flowed through the open window. Moments after their arrival, the swing set had been delivered and assembled. The August afternoon had been cool, a welcome change from the past week’s brutal heat.

As she placed dishes on the shelves of the cabinets she hoped the return to Eastlake to take charge of the newly established Rehab Center had been the right move. Since her mother’s death when Maddie had turned two, Cate’s life had been filled with work, school and raising her child. Now she had returned to the town where she’d attended college. Four of her closest friends had settled here and she believed their presence was a plus. They’d come to the house to help her settle in.

“Where do you want this?” Lauren, owner of the house, held a wok, the metal blackened from use.

Cate pointed to a hook on the wall above the gleaming stove. “Here is good. Maddie and I make stir fry often, especially the chicken cashew recipe you taught the Gang.”

Lauren laughed. “Do you make as much?”

“I’ve managed to cut the recipe down so we only have to eat it for a day or two.” She folded an empty box.

“That’s still my only dish. Thank heavens I’ve a housekeeper who’s a marvelous cook.”

“Thanks for letting me rent your house while I look for one.”

“Don’t be in a rush to buy.” Lauren winked. “Both Liz and I found our happy-ever- afters here. You could be next. There are several new doctors arriving soon.”

Cate closed her eyes lest her friend see the sorrow and anger ever present in her thoughts. She’d lost her chance for a full life when he’d left ten minutes after the graduation ceremony ended without a goodbye. She hadn’t been able to tell him about the pregnancy and she’d been too angry to call him.

“I’m content without a man in my life.” She smiled. “Maddie is great company.”

“She won’t be with you forever.”

“I know but right now I’m content.”

Lauren walked to the kitchen door. “What a great swing set. I’m glad you found someone to set it up. Keeps the kids from trying to help.”

“Bought it in town yesterday morning and the set up was part of the price.” Cate joined her friend. She studied the massive structure. There were swings, a seesaw, and an overhead grill for climbing with a play house on the opposite side from the slide. “Maddie picked this two years ago. Wouldn’t fit in a city apartment.”

Lauren touched Cate’s shoulder. “I’m sorry I never heard about your mother’s death. Mail was often lost as I wandered from country to country.”

“Don’t feel bad about not knowing.” Cate turned from the door. “The kitchen is in order. I wonder how the others are doing?”

Lauren laughed. “Liz is organized and efficient. About Megan and Jenessa, think chaos. One will undo what the other has done. Megan wants color coordination. Jenessa just wants to finish.”

A picture of her two friends formed. “Megan will have a good time finding towels that match.” A sound caused her to turn.

Liz stepped into the room. “Dining room and study are done. Books are shelved. Do you ever read for fun?”

“Seldom. I do watch television with Maddie.” Cate opened the refrigerator and pulled out a platter and two pitchers. “Time for a break. Call the others while I pour lemonade for the children. Take the tea and glasses to the porch.” She went to the door. “Snack time,” she called.

Maddie dashed inside. Three boys followed. “Brownies.”

“One each. We’ll soon be going out for lunch.”

“Are we going to that hot dog place you’re always talking about?” Maddie’s green eyes, the only feature inherited from her mother, glowed with pleasure. “Can’t wait.” She offered the plate to her new friends.

The Taurus Scorpio Connection is featured with Thursday's Opening Scene #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #medical #Romance #Astrology

The ceiling fan stirred the hot, humid air. Alien aromas of sweat, spices and perfumes assaulted her. Lauren Richmond leaned against the examining table and wiped her forehead with a cotton bandanna. A babble of voices floated through the partially open door of the triage room. She looked for Chandra and remembered the tiny Indian nurse had left for the day.

Lauren’s eyes blurred. A sneeze exploded. Her throat ached and a dull pain settled above her eyes. She looked down at her wrinkled khaki slacks, glad she wasn’t wearing white the way she would have at a hospital in the States.

The chatter from the waiting room became the voices of Babel, dislocating her in time and space. For an instant she wondered where she lived this week and what year headed the calendar. A dozen scenes from as many countries flashed in her thoughts. For the past four years she’d worked for International Health Rescue Mission as part of a team following disasters and dispensing medical care and training native health workers.

She opened her eyes. The moment of disorientation vanished. India. The team had settled in the costal plains where a cyclone had ripped through villages and towns leaving death and disease behind. She gripped the edge of the examining table and willed herself not to collapse.

After pulling her spinning emotions under control, she walked to the door of the triage room and motioned to the next group of patients. A dark-skinned woman with pleading brown eyes spoke in a high-pitched voice joining syllables with staccato beats. Three wide-eyed children clung to her sari. As if offering a gift the woman held out a baby. Lauren took the child.

The infant’s swollen belly and thin limbs spoke of malnutrition. Fevered flesh burned Lauren’s hands. The weak mewling cries brought tears to her eyes. She bathed the baby in tepid water and then plunged a needle into the thin muscles of his buttocks. With shaking hands she handed the mother a bottle of sugar water and several of diluted formula. Next, Lauren examined the little girls.

The sing-song spate of chatter stopped. Lauren looked around. Neil Bourne stood in the doorway. Though the day had almost ended, his khakis looked neat. His dark hair, lightly sprinkled with gray and the lines of experience in the corners of his eyes, revealed the ten years’ difference in their ages.

He smiled. In the past, his smiles had brought comfort and allowed her to speak of her dreams like a child talking to a trusted uncle. Today, his smile made her edgy.

“Dear girl, it’s nearly eight. Time to close shop for the day. You work too hard and too long.”

“No more than you.” She studied his face. Something in his expression told her he had news. Was the team moving to the scene of some new disaster? She wanted to protest another dislocation.

“Let me help you finish.”

Unwilling to let her tiredness show, she nodded, stepped to the door and gestured to the next patient.

For an hour, she and Neil assessed the rest of the patients in the waiting room. When the last patient had been seen, she closed the door and slumped on a chair.

“Time to leave.”

Neil’s deep voice lured her to her feet. She washed her hands and splashed water on her face. As they crossed the road to the house where members of the team lived, only his hand at her elbow kept her from staggering.

“Dinner?” he asked.

“Let me change.”

He shook his head. “If I let you go, you’ll collapse on the bed and miss another meal.”

She followed him into the house. “It’s too hot.”

“It’s a far cry from London in May,” he said. “Here, there’s the hot wet season and the hot dry season.”

“It’s not like home either.” Where was home? A chill made her tremble. Her vision blurred and she sank on a dining room chair. Flies droned. The ceiling fan stirred the air.

Ms Lane-Walters is conversant with hospitals and hospital procedures. In this interesting medical romance, she returns to Eastlake Community Hospital in which the first of the series was set. Exhausted, Laurel, whose star sign is Taurus, is an heiress orphaned in tragic circumstances when she was three-years-old. She leaves India, where she has been working for International Health Rescue Mission as part of a team following disasters, dispensing care and training health workers. She has fled from Neil Browne who asked her to marry him, but she did not want all he has to offer her, a roving life. When she arrives in America with the hope of finding a permanent home, Alex Carter, her friend Megan’s brother collects her from the airport. Within next to no time she collapses and is admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia. Alex, a doctor, father of five-year-old Johnny, is still angry after his divorce and his former wife’s death. There is no room in his life for another spoiled, selfish rich woman so it’s useless for Megan to match make. This is an intriguing novel about two characters with problems which need to be resolved, and Alex’s delightful, but insecure young son, who adores his father and is traumatised by the loss of his mother. The Taurus Scorpio Connection is a story to relax with and enjoy it.

EXCERPT:

The plane touched down and rolled to a halt. The mass of passengers pushed to the exit like angry ants from a shattered hill. Lauren remained seated. The aisled cleared. A flight attendant paused beside Lauren’s seat. “Are you okay? Would you like assistance, maybe a wheelchair?”

“No chair, but thanks.” Lauren rose and walked to the exit. Using the railing on the right side of the covered tunnel she soon reached the end. The long hours of travel, the fever and the cough plaguing her since the flight from India had drained most of her reserve strength

At the end of the ramp she scanned the milling crowd and looked toward the barrier where people waited. Where was Megan? Without warning a memory of being sixteen and in love rocked Lauren

A tall, blonde, athletic man studied the people emerging from the flight. His glance slid past her. She walked toward him. “Alex Carter, what are you doing here?”

“Lauren Richmond, I’m here to take you to Eastlake.” He clasped her hand.

“I thought Megan was meeting me.”

“She had to work.” His gaze swept over her. “Rough trip? You look exhausted.”

“I’ve been living a hectic life. How did Megan trick you into meeting me? I could have rented a car.”

A lock of sun-brightened hair fell across his forehead. “That’s a long story. I didn’t know you were coming until six a.m. when my scatterbrain sister called. ‘Alex, I have to work and Lauren’s arriving at ten and could you meet her and I know you’re off so say yes.’”

Lauren laughed. “All without a breath and you agreed.”

He took her arm. His touch, the overheated building, the noisy crowd combined to make her feel faint. She inhaled. A trickle of perfume triggered a cough. She fought to catch her breath. “Let’s get my bag.”

     “Are you home for good?”

How could she tell him she didn’t have a home, just two residences the bank had retained? Would he understand why she had returned to Eastlake? “I don’t know.”

“Why don’t you consider staying in Eastlake? The hospital needs nurses. Have you kept your license?”

“Yes.” She noted the overhead signs pointing to the baggage area and turned to the right. “Lately I haven’t been thinking beyond each day.”

His fingers lightly stroked her jacket sleeve. She wondered if he was aware of the action. The rush of heat she felt in response to his gentleness dissolved the wall holding her pain. In silence she walked beside her.

Once they reached the revolving baggage carrousel for her flight she pointed to the khaki duffel circling with the suitcases. “The duffel’s mine.”

Alex snagged the strap. “Just one.”

She nodded. “I’ve learned to travel light. Not much room in a tent or a hut.”

“What were you doing in a tent?”

“Working for International Health Rescue Missions. Didn’t Megan tell you?”

“Probably. It’s hard finding facts in her chatter.”

They entered the bullet train and exited minutes later at the door leading to the parking lot. The air redolent with exhaust fumes made her choke and cough. Alex opened the car door and slid the duffel in the back.
