1.  What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

 

I’ve been a music teacher for 37 years, piano and guitar. I have a degree in music education. It definitely influences my writing. My first novel, just released last year, features a music teacher as the female lead. And music plays a major role, providing many of the clues to solve the mystery.

 

 

 

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

 

I had intended to write romance in general, but my focus has become romantic suspense. I love doing research and creating clues to mysteries and alternating between the suspense and the romance.

 

 

 

 

3. What is your latest release?

 

Note by Note is my first completed novel, published on Amazon last year. It’s a romantic suspense centered in Sydney, Australia. But there is quite a bit of travel involved - Tasmania, Florence, Seattle, Hawaii, the Mediterranean. I did a lot of traveling over the years and always loved Australia. It begins with a plane crash and the mystery revolves around why it happened and leads to clues in art and music in all the exotic locations.

 

 

4. What are you working on now?

 

I’m working on two projects right now. The first is a direct sequel to Note by Note featuring Finn and Jess in another mystery. And I’m experimenting with time travel this time. But that will only be a fun side trip for them. I don’t intend to make time travel a theme in the rest of the series. It’s just something I want to try.

 

The second project is Memory by Memory, a part of the series called Hearts in Danger I’m developing around the family and friends of Finn and Jess. The first is about Max Chase, who helped them in Hawaii. As the story opens, he has lost his memory and it slowly returns as he unravels a mystery involving the doctor who tries to help him.

 

 

5. Do your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

 

Definitely. I’ve always been an avid reader. I gravitated toward Sandra Brown when she wrote Harlequin series romance. When she began writing romantic suspense, I was hooked. She is an amazing story teller. I also like Alyssa Day, Barbara Delinsky, and Suan Mallery.

 1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?    I've worked for bankers, doctors and lawyers.  I still work for a law firm during the day.  I am assistant to the Majority Owner and Accounting/Billing Coordinator, and Office Manager.  None of these really influenced my choice as a writer.  These jobs were/are do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do.   I've always been a writer since I was very young.  It's in my DNA.

 

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.  I write paranormal romance, romantic suspense and urban fantasy

 

3. What is your latest release?  The last release was "Highland Soul" in 2021.  It is Book 2 in The Talisman Trilogy.

 

4. What are you working on now?  Right now I'm working on "The Tempest" which is Book 3 in my Time Walker Series.

 

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?   I had gotten out of reading for a few years raising kids and working.  A friend of mine gave me a bag of books so I could start reading again years ago, and the more I read the more I decided that I needed to start writing again too.  I'd kind of lost my muse there for a few years after I got married because that's where my focus went.  I have always been interested in the paranormal, even when I was very young.  Reading the new genres they have out today definitely helps with the creative muse.

1.      I was  working as a municipal legal assistant when I took early retirement, which meant I then only had one full-time job that included being a newspaper columnist, freelance writer and greeting card author. I became an author of fiction with my first novel in 2017, Dare To Inherit, and I do find that my experience in the legal field often finds its way into my storytelling. Some of my characters have been lawyers.

 

2.      To date all of my novels have been romantic suspense, but I would not hesitate to change lanes for another genre from time to time, if that’s what I was inspired to do.

 

3.      My latest is Dangerous Getaway, which was released in April 2022, and Sidelined will be released in August 2022.

 

4.      Right now I’m working on the third book of The Martel Sisters trilogy to be released in 2023/24. The books are about three identical sisters: Ginger the writer, Naomi the computer programmer and Alexandra the actress. They are beautiful, accomplished and spirited. Raised by a single parent and still guided by their Grandmother Bridger, these sisters face life … and love … with courage and pizazz.

 

 

5.      I am a voracious reader and enjoy anything that’s well written. It all feeds the imagination, fiction and non-fiction alike. There is always something new to learn, and it keeps me in the zone because everything I read influences my writing in one way or another. As the old adage goes, nothing is ever lost on a writer.

Exhaustion swept through Laure’s body. She bent her head and sipped the cola savoring the taste and the coolness on her dry throat. She listened to the gossip sweeping around the table.

“So I said.” One of the nurses began. “Doesn’t an elevated temp happening three days after surgery mean something’s brewing.” She groaned. “This is the third pending infection for Blunder Doc this month.”

“And it’s only August sixth,” another nurse said. “Give him a chance to better his record.”

“Guess what Princess Doc said this afternoon. ‘Don’t call me. Call the service and someone will get back to you. I have a busy evening.”

“She must have tickets to the opera, Laura mumbled.

A nurse with graying hair Laura had never seen before leaned forward. “Seems things here aren’t much different from the last place I worked.” She unfolded a piece of paper. “Months ago I read this article. ‘Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot and should not practice medicine.”

A blast of chill air sent shivers along Laura’s spine. Mentally she listed the doctors at Bradley Memorial who fit that description. “I think the numbers are too low unless there are four or five hundred doctors on staff.”

“Maybe we have them all,” someone whispered.

Laura frowned. The clipped voice belonged to one of the evening supervisors. What was Edith doing here? How often did someone from administration socialize with staff nurses? The older woman sat next to the young blonde who had just completed her month long orientation.

“Something should be done,” someone said.

Laura scanned her companions. Who had spoken? “What can we do?” Her question joined the chorus.

There’s more.” The supervisor moved the globed candle closer. For an instant the flickering flame changed her round smiling face into a grotesque mask. “Only a doctor can determine if another doctor is incompetent.”

“Wrong,” the stranger nurse said. “Nurses can act.”

“Sure.” Skepticism colored the speaker’s voice. “We all know how they avoid and close their ranks around the incompetent. They’re afraid of what they might find.”

“And if any of the doctors agree with us they’re black-listed.”

“So, what can we do?” Laura’s question halted the buzz of conversation.

“Nothing.” Doug said. “Look at what happened to Alice when she complained about Blunder Doc. She lost her job. While this isn’t always a fun job, it pays the bills.”

A second woman slapped the table. “He’s right. The doctors will continue with business as usual.”

How right they were. Laura drew a deep breath. For more than twenty years, Dr. John Moore had been a sloppy surgeon, Her nails dug into her palms. The infection he had caused when he’d operated on her mother had caused her death. Laura had been forced to face her teenage years motherless. How many times had a similar scenario been repeated because of him?

The stranger nurse rested her elbows on the table. “Who says we must work alone. I’ll tell you what the nurses at the last hospital where I worked did.” She lowered her voice to a near whisper. “They formed a committee.”

Doug laughed. “We could do the same and call ourselves the Committee of Angels.”

Born that hot August night, the Committee began collecting data and investigating the doctors at Bradley Memorial Hospital. During the days and months , though few of the members knew, letters were sent to a select group of physicians on staff.

Dear Doctor,

This book has taken over twenty years to write. Once, a publisher put out a call for manuscripts and I sent a query. They wanted a detailed synopisi and three chapters. I sent this off and waited. A rejection came with a lot of nice comments about the writing but they hated that one of the nurses in the story was a "slut." I wrote a bit more and talked about the idea at the hospital where I worked. Everyone knew I wrote stories and had managed to publish a few. The nurses were enthralled by the idea but several doctors overheard us discussing the idea and they were not happy. Then my critique group was of two minds about the story so I put it aside and went on to write other stories.

     One day, I was looking through my file cabinet for another story I had begun and put aside and found the partial for this story. As I read, I liked what I read and I set out to write it as medical suspense. Suddenly in the middle of a draft, I hit a snag and the story took a twist. After pondering this for days, I decided to begin again, using much of what was initially written but changing it to a sort of romantic suspense. Hopefully I've done what I intended.

Welcome back to Musgrave Landing.

As the investigation unfolds, it turns out that money has gone missing from the village accounts and an old friend of Jane’s, Dirk Ipkiss, might be involved. Then there's the fact that Jack found the murder weapon, and it belongs to Jane.

Thank you so much for allowing me to guest on your blog.

Before I was a fulltime writer, I worked as an information technology analyst. I started from the ground floor, doing user support and worked my way up to server environment supervisor and finally, solution architect and enterprise architect before I retired. The last to positions I worked independently as a contractor to various clients. I was always self-motivated and disciplined, but working one week on site and one week at home, alternately, sharpened these attributes and are invaluable when buckling down to write a novel. I find it easy to sit down and pound out at least a thousand words in one session, usually more. By nature am a planner and my past work experience has expanded this skill too and comes in handy when writing mysteries. I like to storyboard the plot.

Because I read multiple genres, they influence what I write. Romantic suspense with a fifty-fifty split between the mystery and the romance. Urban fantasy with the emphasis a three-way division among paranormal romance, the fantasy aspects, and the mystery.

Cozy mysteries are an eighty/twenty division where the bulk of the book is the mystery and there may or may not be a touch of romance. I also like to include some humour and quirky characters in each novel, a pet, and of course food. In the past ten months I’ve release two urban fantasies, and one cozy mystery.

DEATH AND CUPCAKES is from the Musgrave Landing series, followed by FUN WITH FUNERALS, and March 1, 2022, CONDO CRAZY is released.

Currently I’m work on THE RIGHT ROAD, the next book in the Adam Norcross Mysteries.

1. Tell me about your book? Genre? Deadly Undertaking, a romantic suspense novel. The title is a play on the word “undertaking” because the murder takes place in a funeral home. Lauren Staab returns to her home town to help her father in the family business, the funeral business. Her mother is in the nursing home due to Alzheimer’s Disease, so Lauren works as a bookkeeper and support for her dad. It’s difficult for her. But finding the body dumped in the garage by the mafia is way beyond what she could handle. Thank goodness her friend is there to support her through it all. Or is he more than a friend?

 

2. Where did the idea arise? My dad was an undertaker and so are my brothers. I grew up believing it was natural to have the unclaimed ashes of a stranger out in the pantry on our porch. There is mystery to the funeral business. The regular person has no idea what it is like to be in the funeral business. That’s when I thought this could be an interesting plot for folks who were curious about the everyday life of an undertaker. And of course, there had to be a ghost character, Henry the shadow man, who always shows up at the most inappropriate times.

 

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing? I did some research by quizzing my brother with questions about embalming fluid, picking up a body at the hospital but no scholarly research. I had lived the life as a kid, and what I didn’t know for sure, I embellished a bit. Afterall, it is a work of fiction. That made it fun. I loved the characters in the story too, so I enjoyed throwing them in situations involving romance, murder and lies.

 

4. How long did you take to write the book? The idea stewed in my brain for a couple of years until I finally had to get it down on paper. It took me two years to finish the book because Lauren’s story was based on my life. Once I understood she was just a character and not really me, I could place her in circumstances that I would never be in. I must admit, I spent a whole summer writing short stories trying to put space between Lauren and me.

 

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

I have been writing since I was in second grade. My mother was my teacher. I had a bad habit of finishing my work early, so I would hop up and visit, or interrupt as my mother said, my classmates. So, to stay out of trouble, I began writing stories and then shared them with the class. I had fun entertaining them with my stories, so I continued to write all through school. I took a hiatus to teach, get married, run a flower shop and take care of our two daughters. When we sold the shop in 1995, I asked the editor of the regional newspaper if he would be interested in any articles for the paper. He said “yes!” That was my springboard to launching a career in writing non-fiction articles for magazines, newspapers and online magazines. Then, tired of interviewing people or getting the facts about a vacation place, I decided to try writing fiction and began with writing what I liked to read, mysteries. I think I do have the characteristics of being born under that sign of the twins. I love learning new things and call myself a life-long learner. I enjoy meeting people, and I am in the media or arts as an author.

Perhaps another sign that I am a Gemini. I write non-fiction and fiction. I have non-fiction books in gardening, writing, a MG book for girls, how to record memories for your life story, as well as memoir. The fiction genres are romance, mystery, paranormal and time travel.
