This book was a long time coming. I began it years ago and hit a snag that made me put it away to go on to other projects. Committee of Angels was the title and had been inspired by an article I read in one of my husband's medical magazines. Not sure where the original article wen. I did pull it out. The book was also inspired by events happening at the hospital where I worked. I remember sitting at the desk and talking about the article and the idea for a book with some colleagues. A doctor overheard and told me not to write the book. I began Committee and had about three chapters written when I found I'dlost the inspiration to finish the book so I put it away. Recently, I came upon those three  chapters and read them. Ideas of how to make the book work came to me and so I began to write. The twists and turns are what made the book work now and looking at the original characters and giving them new and real motivations is what brought the book to completion.

I'm glad I saved those three chapters and I'm happy I was able to get past the original block to complete the book.

Tuesday's Inspiration - The Company of Colleagues #MFRWauthor #aminspired

On Saturday I met with some writing friends. We belong to RWA and have a chapter meeting once a month. I always leave these meetings feeling inspired by the success of others and hearing about all the things and ways they have of promoting their books. There were 10 of us there today and all but two are published. Those two will be published one of these days. Maybe soon and maybe later. The great thing is how much encouragement people give each other. Two people read for critique and received some good advice. What I found interesting is that for the most part there is agreement on some points and not on the others. People aren't trying to re-write a person's story but speak of things that confuse them or things that seem to be missing and are needed.

What about you? Do you have a group of friends who are writing? Do they inspire you?

There's a difference between having other writers view your work and showing your stories to family and friends who don't write. There can be one of two reactions from these people. Either they love every word and have no idea how to make the story better or they have a million nits to pick and leave you ready to cry. I've had the same reaction and decided when I wanted my work critiques to go to those who faced the same struggles as I do getting the words on paper.

Tuesday's Inspiration - People

Today I've been thinking about people who have inspired me to write. To write you must be a reader.

When I was a very young child, my grandfather used to read to me. He would put his finger under each word as he read. When I was three, I began to read back to him. From him I learned the love of books. He also taught me to observe people when we were out at interesting places like the circus and the zoo or just walking about.

My father was the next one. There were always books in the house and we were encouraged to read. I'm afraid I was the one of the children who wanted to read every book on the shelves. In third grade I wrote a book report on Anna Karenina and horrified the teacher for two reasons. One bacause I read the book and the other because I wrote an alternate ending.
My father confronted the teacher and said "She can read any book on the shelves of my house. Did she understand what she read." The teacher had to agree. About changing the ending, he thought that was cool. When I published my first book, he read every word and he showed the book to everyone whether they were interested or not.

There was a teacher in school and I don't remember her name but she encouraged my writing and thought I should go to college for journalism. I did not do this but as a nurse many of my patients became inspirations for the characters in the books I write today.

The last inspirations are my grandchildren. They are found at various ages in many of my stories. Just bits and pieces of them. I remember using the oldest twice in one story. As the stubborn funny two year old and as the bright seven year old. They are the characters in my YA fantasy series. Not every part of them but their personalities come through.
