One way to prep the reader of a big scene is by using a preview scene. This can be done in several ways. The scene could be in the character's imagination and shows him or her triumphant or defeated. This could be a real scene that will mirror the big scene but the outcome is different from what happens in the major scene. If the major scene himges on an object that is lost or found, show several small scene where this happens so the loss or find won't leap at the reader.
Another way to lay the ground work for a major scene is to have several small scenes where matters become worse and worse. The reader will know you're building up to something and they will anticipate. If your scene is to be dark, this is one way. Maybe your big scene is going to be light. When you're building those little scenes showing improvement don't make them all sweet and light but use a little dark note. One wants the reader to think I knew this would happen but there's always been a bit of doubt.
