Sometimes stories ahve two plot lines and neither can be determined to be the main plot. They can become parallel plots with each having the same impact on the story. Using them can be difficult and making them work to make the novel whole takes some thinking. There are times when they must come together. The characters must be shown to interact early on and then the plot splits and the two run rather in tandem moving from one set of characters to the other. The opening crisis will be mirrored in the ending crisis bringing the two parts of the story to a satisfactory ending.
Making each plot interesting and maintaining the energy in both takes pains. Remember that each must have the major scenes neeeded to make a story. Though each group of characters is busy with their own problems connections should be shown. An awareness of the others forms a bridge between the two plots.
Events in each plot somehow miror what happens in the other but not exactly, For one set of characters, there can be physical awareness and on the other internal awareness. With great care, this technique can be very effective.
