Tuesday's Inspiration - Taking a Giant Step #MFRWauthor #amwriting
When we write, we're taking giant steps or at least we should be. There's the idea and it's a giant step toward the book at the end of the road. Ideas come into play in other parts of what we're writing. Let's look at a few.
The character - Now you could say he's tall with red hair, green eyes and a buff body. Now that's an idea but it takes another step to make this character come alive. He towered over her. She backed away from the flare of anger in his green eyes. Now this gives a better picture of the character. Now you could get carried away and continue to build a word picture of this man. But after awhile the reader will be bored. Another giant step to take is to make his picture as vivid as you can without spewing for pages.
The same goes for setting. You've set a scene at a picnic. There's a lot that happens at a picnic. You could write pages and still never give the picture. What you need to do is find the bits and pieces that weave the scene without spending pages. Here's where one word or two can show more than a million pictures.
So let's hear it for taking those giant steps ang going from the idea to the finished book/
So basically you're telling us by showing examples of how to show and not tell. We should be more descriptive with things like scene & character descriptions or what is going on (action).
ReplyDeleteI do like your examples. You are actually showing us ways to show not tell. Good Job.

Thanks for stopping by. I sort of became side-tracked when writing this and didn't really say all I wanted to say
