Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #reading #Thoughts #Writing

Meander 1  Reading - Still reading Cherryh's Foreigner series. There are 21 books in the series all intriguing and her world is seamless and great.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - The Big Lie - I was in high school in the 1950s and there was much discussed about the big lie. We discussed this in hirsoty and civic's classes. If one told the big lie often enough people would begin to beliefe this lie as the truth. We ahve seen this among those who deny the last presidential election. What interests me is that during myhigh school years, this was known to be a communist kind of action. Makes me wonder how these people who are continually expressing their big lie about the election got the idea to repeat and repeat what is not the truth.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am still outlining the chapters for Keltoi and have six more to plan. Ideas for the next chapters in the book began last night as I settled to sleep so I'll start on chapters 10 t0 12 today, Once all 15 are settled the book will begin to flow.

Sunday today at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com Committee of Angels is featured #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Romance #suspense #medical

The article passed around the table on a hot August night. “Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot or should not practice medicine.” The nurses at Bradley Memorial thought they had them all. That night they formed a group they called The Committee of Angels.

Nearly a year has passed and Laura Bancroft wonders why little has been done to change things. She also wonders about some of the nurses fitting the pattern. Laura has three doctors on her list of incompetents. She seldom meets with the other members and several of the others are upset with her. When her ex-husband joins the medical staff, she realizes she still has feelings for him. One of her list of doctors dies after emergency surgery and Laura finds her suspected since she was assigned to the doctor. She must deal with suspicions, her feelings for her ex. Then a second on her list commits suicide and speaks of blackmail.

Can Laura learn the truth of who is responsible before she faces arrest?

Book Review: Committee of Angels by Janet Lane Walters

1st sentence: Laura scurried down the hospital corridor, feeling like the White Rabbit.

Murder and mayhem with doctors and nurses spike a nicely paced ‘who dunnit.’ Ms. Walters pens the most intriguing characters, and this story pacts a punch bowl full of them.

Excellent gripping read with a surprise and satisfying ending. Couldn’t put the book down once I started. Highly recommended for anyone who likes mysteries and medical dramas with a nice touch of romance.

Friday E. R, Yatscoff is visiting and talking about Characters #BWLAuthor #Heroes #heroines #villains

Day 1 Characters

2. Heroes, Heroines, Villains. Which are your favorite to write?

My characters are confronted with something they’ve never dealt with before. It’s the same in my MG and YA stories where my unassuming protagonists must step up big time to solve their dilemma. They discover they have the hearts of lions in them.

3. Heroes. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the man you want every reader to love? Do they come before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

I suppose my protagonists are reluctant heroes thrown into situations, their world turned upside down. Most are from real life, created around people I’ve known at some point in my life. They are imbedded in my head before the story is written.

4. Heroines. How do you find them? Do pictures, real life or imagination create the woman you want the reader to root for? Do they appear before the plot or after you have the idea for the story?

  Your favorite book?

The only thing close to heroines are the women in FIRE DREAM and MAN ON FIRE. One is a news reporter and the other is a dogged fore investigator. Both drive the stalwart firefighter character crazy. They were vital to the story and created almost simultaneously as the protagonist was. The female fire investigator steered a lot of the story.  As for my favorite book, I think it’s FIRE DREAM

5. Villains or villainesses or an antagonist, since they don’t always have to be the bad guy or girl. They can be a person opposed to the hero’s or heroine’s obtaining their goal. How do you choose one? How do you make them human?

Two protagonists in SERVICES RENDERED are almost villians. They color outside the lines when it comes to vengeance for their clients. Their only saving grace is that they aren’t afraid of gangbangers, who are quite a bit worse. In TEETH OF THE COCODRILO I have a Mexican criminal and sicario (assassin) and a high ranking police commandant who is in a gray area.

6. What is your latest release? Who is the hero, heroine and or the villain?

My latest release is SERVICES RENDERED. The big hero at the end is an indigenous man who pulls them out of danger. My two sort of heroes are occasionally devils and sometimes angels. They really turn into devils when their families are threatened by gangbangers (villians) and they must react—fight fire with fire.

7. What are you working on now?

THE NIKE BIRDS: It’s almost ready for Beta readers. My small publisher only wanted my firefighter series so I’m going all out to get a big publisher.

Two university students, Canadian Lucas Horne and the rich and beautiful Colombian Avalina Vargas, meet on a jungle trek to Colombia’s Lost City where they find a strong attraction for each other. Their subsequent abduction finds them as prisoners in a remote jungle camp and sets in motion a country-wide manhunt.

8. How can people find you?  My website is YatscoffBooks.com which has  links to all my novels. My email is TGRbooks@shaw.ca.          FB page is  E.R. Yatscoff author

9. Who are your favorite authors?   Dan Fesperman    Linwood Barclay (beat me out for a Crime Writers of Canada award)   Carmen Amato (Acapulco detective Emilia Cruz)

Thursday About the writing of Pursuing Doctor West #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #medical #humor

I had never written a story that was all humor. A friend challenged me to try. I must admit my sense of humor can be a bit twisted but I decided to take the challenge. Zelda appeared as I was falling asleep and trying to figure a plot. I realized she had loved Michael since she was a child and moved to the house next door. He'd a;ways thought of her as the pest next door. So how did one bring this pair together. With difficulty. The enxt day as I was plotting the story, an inspiration hit. Michael seemed to be dating women through the alphabet and Zelda was at the end. Somehow the scenes formed. One of my favorites was the condo swimming pool scene. I even laughed while writing this. Other scenes popped into view with Zelda always losing things. Zelda is greatly respected inher role as nurse manager of a hospital unit. Only Michael seems to have carried all his ideas about Zelda as a pest into his actions.

Writing humor is hard but I managed to do this once. Though I can put bits of humor in other stories, they're always used to give the reader a break from seriousness. keeping the tone light and amusing in a medical setting almost did me in until I found a character for a bit piece who had a nature similar to Zelda's. When his suture line opens. He declares. "I've come undone." Giving what could be a serious matter a hint of humor but alsy showing the actions of the nurses and doctors in contrast.

I doubt I'll ever try this experiment again but I learned a lot about writing during this challenge.

Join the authors at #MFRWHooks here http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com for some great excerpts. Mine is found at eclecticwriter.blogspot.com and features the villains of The Aries Libra Connection.

Blurb:

Jenessa is Aries, a nurse, union advocate and likes a good fight

Eric is Libra, Director of Nursing, and believes in compromise.

Can these two find a way to uncover the underhanded events at the hospital? They’re on opposite sides but the attraction between them is strong. She’s a widow who fought to save her husband’s life during a code. She feels guilty because the love she and her husband shared had died before his death. He assisted at the code but he feels guilty since he was the one who was responsible for the short staffing the night her husband died.

Now they face falling in love and trying to solve the problems between the nurse’s union and the president of the hospital’s Board who wants a take over of the hospital by his hospital group. Is their connection strong enough to survive?

EXCERPT: 1

“You sure know how to get attention.” Sandra Wallace’s nasal twang grabbed Jenessa’s wandering attention.

Jenessa looked at the crowd and leaned against Eric. For a moment, she savored the aura of protection he projected. “Isn’t that what you always say?” She stared at the dark-haired woman and shook her head in disbelief. “A pink suit and heels. This is a picnic, not tea with the First Lady.”

“I can tell you’re not hurt.” Sandra wheeled. As she strode away, her briefcase swung like a pendulum.

“Bag lady,” Jenessa whispered.

“Why?”

“That briefcase is an extension of her arm. I wonder if she goes to bed with it.”

“Maybe she has dark secrets.” Eric grinned. “Ready?”

EXCERPT 2

Before he had a chance to identify himself, a booming voice ended the staring match. A hearty slap made him drop the beer. White foam gathered on the grass.

“Getting into things already. Good idea.” The Board president stepped around Eric. “Jenessa, you look good enough to start a dead man’s heart. Two of you been introduced?”

“Not officially,” Eric said. The audible wheeze in Bishop’s breathing made him wonder why the man was puffing on a cigar.

“Allow me. Jenessa Robertson, Eric Bradshaw.” Bishop beamed. “Now, let me tell you, this little girl’s not as sweet as she looks. She’s a rabble-rouser. Fights hard for the union.”

Sweet didn’t match Eric’s impression of her from the past or today. Stubborn, courageous, a leader and much too attractive did.

Her hands moved to her hips. “It’s contract time, Mr. Bishop.”

“Don’t be rushing into the fire, little girl. Eric just arrived.”

“We’ve been on hold for months.”

The obese man’s teeth clamped on the cigar. “Stick to nursing, little girl. When you have a seat on the Board, you can push.”

“We’re asking for one.”

“Already have a nurse. Your director has a seat.”

She made a face. “I mean a real nurse.” She turned and jogged away.

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Try for Casual #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Writer's tip #casual

Try for casual doesn't meat just to toss something into your story. What you need to think about is strategy. What you put in the first few scenes if it's an impliment like a gun, a car or some other object, make sure this is shown in the end. This brings a reader's attention. I remember reading a friend's book and she made a mention from an older woman to the heroine that though vaguely said made me wonder what this comment meant. I finished the book and was still in the air about that comment. I mentioned this to my friend and she looked startled. She realized this casual mention needed to be explained and shown. When her rights were released on the book and she went to another publisher, she made sure to bring that casual remerk to have meaning.

Don't distract the reader iwth asides. This dilutes the impact of the story. That's what my friend did when she didn't bring the casual comment to have meaning in the end of the story. So make those casual remarks or props have a meaning to the end of the story.

Meandering on Monday with Janet Lane Walters #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Reading #Writing #Thoughts

Meander 1 - Reading - Am reading Cherryh's Foreigner series again and learning things I'd forgotten and also seeing how her plots are woven seamlessly. These are fun books to read and I'm always hoping there will be more in the series.

Meander 2 - Thoughts - Am becoming anxious about the coming election and I definitely will vote. I sure wish for a positive outcome and that means no people elected who want to take everyone's rights away like they've already done one. I've come to realize one of the strange groups of people I won't mention have a meaning in their group. queers anonymous is how I feel about them. I will vote and I will not vote for anyone who has endorsements by parties who want to end democracy.

Meander 3 - Writing - Have finished rough drafting two chapters of Keltoi and am ready for the third. Then I must write chapter bits for  chapters 7 through 15. so I can really concentrate on finishing amother and the final book so far in the Moon Rising series.

Friday Eileen Troemel is visiting and talking about being a Panster of a Plotter #MFRWAuthor #Panster #Plotter #Characters #scenes #science fiction

 Panster or Plotter

Day 1

1. Are you a panster or a plotter or perhaps a bit of both?  I am a panster. I don't plan out anything. I sit down and start typing. Occasionally, I will type out the next few scenes in my story but generally I just type what .

2. Which comes first - characters or plot for you?  It varies. Scenes or characters are usually the start for me. I might see a scene in my head or I could be focused on the character. For Fractured, I knew I was writing a dark romance so I started with a scene. I started with a prison planet with these bad being which are so dangerous. I wanted to build a scene with contrasts. Men working their way through what appears to be a beautiful natural location.

3. What are you working on now? Is this a book in a current series or something totally new?  I've got two series I'm working on. Sacrificed and another one - which I don't have a solid name for yet. Sacrificed to the Sea Monster comes out in December. The second book needs to come out of my head. The other one, I've written the first book and have two more to write. It's an alien story where the humans are trying to negotiate with the T'mbarians. So they bring women who are to be mates wiht T'mbarian males. P'lar had a mate who died and didn't want another mate. Janine hated her life on Earth. She is looking for love but doesn't find it.

4. Do you have some kind of object or place that figures in most of your books? I use gems a lot, hospitals and caves.  Not in every story, I like to feature local geography when I can. Wild Magic series has feature. Paranormal Investigators is set in Milwaukee.

5. Do you write everyday or just when the spirit hits? I go in cycles. Usually I do editing for a time and then I'll write for a time and sometimes I'll read for a bit.

6. Where can we find you?   https://linktr.ee/eileentroemel

7. Who are your favorite authors? What about a book you’ve enjoyed?   I have never been able to narrow my favorite authors to one. Piers Anthony, Anne McCaffery, JD Robb / Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Shakespeare... What I look for is a story which makes me forget everything else and focus on the story. If the real world drops away, the book has done what it's supposed to.

Thursday A Bit About How Choices Began #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #medical #hospital politice #romance

Choices is a medical romance featuring an older woman who is the Director of Nursing at a hospital. There is a srike of the nurses threatening. She begins to suspect all isn't above board and she must deal with many things. This story began when nurses at a local hospital went on strike. As a former nurse, I read all the articles in the newspaper written about what was happening. To my surprise, I learned a few things that surprised me. There were also other articles in the paper at that time about events in other hospitals. As U wanted to write about a nurse who was into her forties, the ideas coalesced and Choices was born. Some of the events in the story were based on real happenings that I embroidered a bit taking into consideration the characters that had been forming in my head. I listened to those voices and wove the story. Writing this book was fun and I enjoyed making the choices the characters had to face. The original title Come Into The Light had never seemed to fit the story so when I had my rights back, I changed the title to Choices. The choices of all the characters had an impact on the final story.

BLURB:

Jenessa is Aries, a nurse, union advocate and likes a good fight.

Eric is Libra, Director of Nursing, and believes in compromise.

Now they face falling in love and trying to solve the problems between the nurse’s union and the president of the hospital’s Board who wants a take over of the hospital by his hospital group. Is their connection strong enough to survive?

EXCERPT:

Eric emerged from the tree-sheltered path and stopped to let a herd of children charge past. Where was Sam and where was the ball field? His buddy had volunteered him as first base umpire for the game between the nurses and a team from the other departments.

“Eric, over here.”

He jogged toward the picnic table where Sam sat. The children returned. With the adroitness he’d once displayed on the football field, he twisted and evaded until he cleared the crowd.

“Just like old times, my man.” Sam’s brown hand slapped Eric’s.

“Hardly. Where’s your gaudy uniform?” When Eric had played football, Sam had been a member of the marching band. He’d also been pianist for the jazz ensemble. Eric rested his hands on his thighs until he caught his breath. “I’m too old for this.”

Sam laughed. “At thirty-two? In five minutes, I guarantee you’ll be rejuvenated.”

“About the game. Fun or serious?”

“A bit of both.” Sam slid from the table. “The captain and pitcher for the nurses is intense. She likes to win.”

“Is this a warning?”

Sam’s laughter rolled the way his fingers moved along the piano keys. “You’ll see. Wait ‘til you see her legs. Long and lean and stretching forever. Simone threatened to blacken my eyes if I leer. Grab a beer and let’s go.”

When Eric reached the field, he forgot the beer. The hospital’s problems vanished. He put the beer on the ground several yards from first base and stared at the pitcher. Sam had been on target.

He studied her exceptional legs until they vanished beneath brief red shorts. His stare lingered on the white tee shirt that clung to her small, yet perfect, breasts. Sunlight caught the red glints in her brown hair and turned them into flames. As she moved from the mound, his body reacted. How was he going to remember he was her boss?
