Cerene - is a daughter of the outlawed wizards. Unlike the other wizards who can only use the white fyrestones, she can use all. She stows away on a ship leaving the isle where the wizards were imprisoned and hopes to find a place where she can live and use her talents.
Riara is the daughter of the priest and priestess of Fyre. She has been kidnapped by the wizards and must be freed.
Lorton is the youngest son of the wizards of Fyre who remain in the Citadel. He befriends a newly awakened yellow dragon and leaves his home with the dragon to seek the place where the dragons are strong.
Arkon is the son of the dragon riders who brought the dragons back to their land. As the youngest, he fears he won't have a dragon but he befriends Lorton and the yellow dragon.
Together, the four and their dragons and fyrestones take on the invading wizards.
