You may need to give the reader a bit about some event that happened to a character in the past. There are two ways of doing this. One is to write a summary. Remember this is all tell and can work very well if you don't want a long explanation of the event. The other way is to use a flashback which means creating a scene. this of course is show. Both work perhaps one way may be better for your story than the other. Think carefully and try both methods to find the right one for your story.
