Friday Sierra Brave is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #crisis center #teacher #Paranormal #fairy tales

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

So many things…I’ve worked part-time in a music store. I was a relief counselor for a crisis center and group home while I was in college. I worked as a before-and-after-school care teacher before being hired as the administrator of a satellite college completion program on a military base. I enjoyed working with the adult-student population and helping people finish their Baccalaureate degrees so I continued in the field and even took some graduate courses in Adult Education Administration until my son was born. I decided to stay home with him and later with his sisters. I worked on and off during that time, but since my son was what school systems call twice-exceptional (on the autistic spectrum but also intellectually gifted), I spent a lot of time advocating for him. I started writing about seven years ago.

I don’t know if past job experiences have influenced my writing much, but I’m sure my life experiences do. I sometimes use favorite places I’ve been as settings. Even if I fictionalize them, I attempt to recapture the feelings those places gave me. I have taken inspiration from some of the people I’ve worked with when creating some of my characters as well.

2. Are you genre-specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

I don’t have a specific genre though it might have helped my career if I did. My Triple Passion Play series is retro-contemporary menage (spans two decades from when the MCs first become a trouple in their early twenties to when they’re forty-somethings still dealing with the unique challenges of maintaining their relationship while raising a family.

I probably lean more toward paranormal, like my Horse Mountain Shifters series which is a mixture of paranormal and contemporary western. The series currently has four books, and I have two more in the planning process right now. My newest series, Fated Fairytales, is a fantasy fiction retelling of some old fairytale favorites with a paranormal/shifter twist and a bit of danger and magic.

3. What is your latest release?

Scarlett and the Big Bad is the first book in the Fated Fairytales series. The title probably gives away the Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs connection. The pig-shifters are small supporting characters. The main characters are the “Big Bad Wolf,” werewolf, Monty Blackwolf, and his human, fated mate, Scarlett.

4. What are you working on now?

I have two things in production right now. The first is Fated Fairytales book two, a reverse harem retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Scarlett and Monty’s romance arc is completed in book one, but the overall arc of a community of shifters battling a dangerous order of magical human traffickers continues as Goldie’s romance begins.

My other project is a serialized story I’m writing on the reading app, Radish. Alice in Shifterland is a campy, steamy, and over-the-top fantasy fiction, reverse harem romance about a socialite who chases a were-rabbit into a tear in and space where she finds out who she really is in the course of falling ass-backwards into one crap storm after another. Writing the first season, Down the Rabbit Hole, was a ton of fun and probably what got me started on fairytale retellings. The entire first season is currently free while I’m posting new chapters in season two, Rise of the White Queen, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

Sure, I loved Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse books so she’s probably why I write a lot of paranormal romance and continue to read more. I just finished Howl (Sin City Wolf book 1) by January Bain.

Cate Rollins stood in the sun-filled kitchen of the house she’d rented and opened another box. The cheery yellow walls and the dark oak cabinets made the large room seem cozy. Yesterday she and her daughter had arrived in mid-afternoon and blessed her friend for leaving most of the furniture. She’d brought little of the battered furniture from the apartment.

The sound of children’s laughter flowed through the open window. Moments after their arrival, the swing set had been delivered and assembled. The August afternoon had been cool, a welcome change from the past week’s brutal heat.

As she placed dishes on the shelves of the cabinets she hoped the return to Eastlake to take charge of the newly established Rehab Center had been the right move. Since her mother’s death when Maddie had turned two, Cate’s life had been filled with work, school and raising her child. Now she had returned to the town where she’d attended college. Four of her closest friends had settled here and she believed their presence was a plus. They’d come to the house to help her settle in.

“Where do you want this?” Lauren, owner of the house, held a wok, the metal blackened from use.

Cate pointed to a hook on the wall above the gleaming stove. “Here is good. Maddie and I make stir fry often, especially the chicken cashew recipe you taught the Gang.”

Lauren laughed. “Do you make as much?”

“I’ve managed to cut the recipe down so we only have to eat it for a day or two.” She folded an empty box.

“That’s still my only dish. Thank heavens I’ve a housekeeper who’s a marvelous cook.”

“Thanks for letting me rent your house while I look for one.”

“Don’t be in a rush to buy.” Lauren winked. “Both Liz and I found our happy-ever- afters here. You could be next. There are several new doctors arriving soon.”

Cate closed her eyes lest her friend see the sorrow and anger ever present in her thoughts. She’d lost her chance for a full life when he’d left ten minutes after the graduation ceremony ended without a goodbye. She hadn’t been able to tell him about the pregnancy and she’d been too angry to call him.

“I’m content without a man in my life.” She smiled. “Maddie is great company.”

“She won’t be with you forever.”

“I know but right now I’m content.”

Lauren walked to the kitchen door. “What a great swing set. I’m glad you found someone to set it up. Keeps the kids from trying to help.”

Tuesday's Writer's Tip - Single Person Viewpoint #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #wroting #Viewpoint #Single person

A single person viewpoint for the story means the entire storyis told through that person's eyes, ears, feelings and descriptions. There are usually several characters in a story so choosing the right one can be difficult. If you choose Dan, the murdered, you would have a different story than if you choose Steve, the detective. So when you sit down, you must decide whose story you want to tell. This can be an easy choice or a hard one.

Choosing the character who has the most to win makes for a different struggle than if you choose the person who has the most to lose. So wait until you decide what kind of story you plan to write before choosing a single viewpoint character to be the eyes and ears of the story.

You could also choose an outside observer to be the single viewpoint chracter. This outside character can see or hear different chanractere. But -- there;s always a but. This outside character can't know what the characters he's observing feel. He can't know what their interior problems bring to the story. Emotions other than the surface ones can;t; be shown since this outside observer isn't in any character's head.

Meander 1 - Reading while waiting for some of my favorite authors new books, I'm still reading Marian Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Someof them I read so long ago, they're almost like new books until something pops into my head that I've read this before but I don't remember all that happens. This is nice for an escape and helps when I 'm writing contemporary fiction.

Meander 2 Thoughts - Snow - I have managed to leave the house one day in the past week or so and that was to the bank and post office. My son and granddaughter haven't done much to clean off my car and I do hate wearing the only pair of boots I have. They are clod-hoppers and hard to walk in. At least the walks are cleaned. The time indoors really ahsn't changed that much in the past year so there's no sense in complaining. Some day we'll be free to gad about.

Meander 3 - Writing - Am well into Haunted Dreams second draft and am putting the story in order and talkign out the things that are mentioned in a chapter before they happened in the story. This is really a fun draft to do.

Review:

Cate Rollins lost Rick Somers when he drove to the west coast after their high school graduation. She thought he loved her, but he never returned…until 9 years later.

“Opposites” is a great descriptive word for Cate and Rick’s personalities. Ms. Lane Walters’ develops an excellent story-line between the two with even a few surprises. There’s more to Cate’s life than she knows and more to Rick’s than he knows – and when the two reconnect a firestorm shakes them both awake and rekindles the smolder. The story sends the reader into a battle of wills and will nots full of emotions from the past and the present, along with recreating tensions (sensual and anger issues).

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, quick read, this is an entertaining story with a happy ending, and I look forward to reading another of this series.
