Wednesday's Writer's Tip - Tracking What Can Go Wrong - #MFRWauthor #amwriting
Now you've finished at least one draft of your story and it's time to look at revisions. There are things that can go wrong with the writing, not to mention the plot and the characters. The writing should have a big bit to do with your revisions. So let's look at them.
Monotonous sentence structure. This is designed to put the reader to sleep and sort of becomes sing-song. This often happens in my rough drafts and needs to be changed when I'm revising.
Subject and verb are separated makes a tangle. Those wonderful phrases explaining the character go on and on and then the verb hits. But the reader may have to re-read the sentence a number of times for sense to click in.
Words and phrases are repeated too often. The critique group I belong to is great at picking up the many times a particular word is used in a passage. I once read a story where beautiful was used at least once in each sentence. Boring.
Correct grammar makes a sentence read wrong. We all want our grammar to be correct but sometines sentences worrying about whom read strange.
Adverbs used in the wrong way. Put the adverb at the beginning or end of the sentence.
