Amber Daulton is visiting and talking about Who She Was Before #MFRWAuthor #Romance #contemporary #time travel #historical #paranormal

What Were You Before

Day 1

1. What were you before you became an author? Did this influence your choices as a writer?

I’ve wanted to be an author since I was twelve years old, but of course, life and responsibilities got in the way. By day, I worked in the dreaded service industry, at restaurants and retail stores. At night, I continued to write and included some of my personal work experiences as back stories and on-page action for my characters.

2. Are you genre specific or general? I don’t mean major genres but subdivisions or romance, mystery or paranormal.

I’m a romance author, but I don’t stick to just one sub-genre. I write contemporary, suspense, time travel, historical, and paranormal. Currently, I’m focusing my efforts in romantic suspense.

3. What is your latest release?

Shea O’Bannon and Trevor Madero co-star in Trevor’s Redemption, a steamy romantic suspense novella in my Arresting Onyx series. Onyx is an underground crime organization with a foothold in several American cities, and Trevor is a reluctant, guilt-ridden enforcer among their ranks. Shea is a graphics designer with no clue about her new boyfriend’s gang affiliations, but she knows he’s hiding something from her. The return of his manipulative ex puts their relationship—and their lives—in jeopardy. When his secrets come to light, Trevor and Shea will have to find a way to work together, or kiss their love goodbye.

This brand new book was released on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023, and it’s only 99 cents until August 29th. You can find it here: https://books.amberdaulton.com/trevorsredemption

4. What are you working on now?

I’m revising a New Adult Christmas romance for re-release (it’s currently with my publisher, but I’ll get the rights back to it soon), and I’m getting Arresting Alan, book 4 in the Arresting Onyx series, ready for its April 2024 release date.

5. Does your reading choices influence your choice of a writing career?

Yes, I suppose. I mostly read romance, all sub-genres except Inspirational and poetry, but I have read a few thrillers and mysteries, which makes me want to write those kind of books. My writing schedule is full for the foreseeable future, however, so I probably won’t be dipping my toes into those genres anytime soon.

6. Where can we find you?

I love hearing from readers. You can visit me through social media here: https://linktr.ee/AmberDaulton or go straight to my website: https://amberdaulton.com.

Eileen Charbonneau is visiting and talking about her latest release #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #young adult #mystery

. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

My latest is Stolen at the Wildlife Sanctuary, new this summer. It is a YA mystery and the third of my Linda Tassel Mystery series.

2. Where did the idea arise?

My original idea was to write a mystery series based on my love of Nancy Drew but have my heroine look more like me, and NOT have her be a perpetually 16 year old. So Linda is a young Cherokee woman and her boyfriend Tad Gist is a Buffalo born transplant to the South of the 1990s. In the first and second books they were in high school, and in this one they're in college together.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

Always a danger--getting lost in research.  I can tell you LOTS about Underground Atlanta and its history! For this one I relied on my memories of living in the area and all the things I loved about this vibrant city. I enjoyed delving into Chrokee customs and history too, of course. The sexual harassment of young women in educational environment and colonial attitude elements are, unfortunately, perrenial subjects.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

About 9 months.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?

My first published novel came out in (gulp!) 1988, WAY before most of my current young readers were born! My Sun Sign is Aries.

6. Do you write in a number of genres or stick to one?

I enjoy writing historical novels with good love stories the most, but mysteries are a wonderful challenge to my non-linear brain. And of course, Linda and Tad provide a growing teen aged love story, as well as mystery-solving partnership.

Three Books by Joan Donaldson Yarmey are featured today on Saturday's Blurbs #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Books #Blurbs #Mystery #Romance

Sleuthing the Klondike

In the summer of 1898 Helen Castrel arrives in Victoria, British Columbia, from England and she hires Baxter Davenport of the Davenport & Son Detective Agency to go with her to Dawson City to find her second oldest brother, David, whom she hasn’t seen since she was eleven years old.

David had been trouble to the family since he was young and was sent to Canada as a remittance man ten years ago. The last communication her father, Charles Castrel, received from David was late the summer before when he sent a telegram from Victoria saying he was on his way to the Klondike gold rush at Dawson City. Since then Charles Gastrel has heard nothing from his son, not even a letter stating where his remittance money was to be sent. Helen needs to find David to make sure he’s alive and to deliver a message from their father.

Mattie Lewis, Helen Castrel’s lady’s maid, insisted on accompanying Helen, not only to look after her but because she has worked for the family for years and remembers David better than Helen does. She also has her own motive for wanting to find David.

Baxter Davenport isn’t sure about travelling north with two women. He will have a job to do and doesn’t need to be looking after them. Plus, he doesn’t like the idea that Helen Castrel is excited about being a sleuth along with him. He soon finds out that both women can look after themselves.

The three head north armed with an old photograph and a recent description they obtained from David’s former landlady. They arrive in Dawson City where the gold rush is in full swing. There they are challenged by deceit, fraud, and danger in their quest to find David.

Rushing the Klondike

In this sequel to Romancing the Klondike, it is 1898 and Pearl Owens has been in Dawson City for two years. She’d originally come north with her cousin Emma to write about the people and places along the Yukon River for her hometown newspaper and had stayed to write about the Klondike Gold Rush and Dawson City.

Pearl has been unlucky in love. She fell in love with a man named Joseph Ladue, the founder of Dawson City, but he loved another woman and returned to his fiancĂ©e in New York in 1897. Another man, Paul Gamon, has expressed his desire to court Pearl, but Pearl wishes only to be friends with him.

Pearl’s best friend, Florence, and her older brother, Andrew, cross the Chilkoot Trail and arrive in Dawson in search of gold. Pearl remembers Andrew as the scrawny boy who threw snakes and spiders at her and Florence when they were children. She is taken by the handsome man he has become.

Andrew’s first desire is to stake a gold claim after such a long, hard trip. He feels a growing attraction for Pearl but must decide whether he wants to win her hand or follow his dream.

A Killer Match

Jenna Hamilton is a dating coach and the co-owner, with Adam Owens, of a bookstore in the Net Loft on Granville Island in Vancouver. Hillary Greenwood is her best friend and owns a hair salon in the Net Loft. Hillary’s car is being repaired and one of her hairdressers, Bruno King, offers her a ride home after work. It is dark and raining heavily as they leave Granville Island in Bruno’s 1965 Mustang. A truck comes up behind and rams them three times—the third time sends them crashing into a streetlight pole. Bruno is killed.

This looks like a case of road rage until Bruno’s condo, and Hillary’s house and her salon are trashed. Jenna had set up one of her part time employees, Michele, and Bruno through her dating coach business and she helps Michele adjust as the life Bruno had presented to everyone begins to unravel.

Joan Donaldson Yarmey is Visiting and Talking about her latest release #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #Mystery #Klondike #research

 1.    Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

My latest book is called Sleuthing the Klondike. It is book two in my publisher, BWL, Inc.’s , Canadian Historical Mystery Collection. It is also the third book of my Historical Yukon Novels. The first two are Romancing the Klondike (book three of my publisher’s Canadian Historical Brides Collection) and Rushing the Klondike, which is a continuation of the Romancing the Klondike story.

 2.    Where did the idea arise?   My publisher had previously published the twelve books of the Canadian Historical Brides Collection in which a story was set in each of the ten provinces and two territories (Northwest Territories and Nunavut were combined). Because I had travelled to the Yukon twice and had hiked the Chilkoot Trail 1997 which was the hundredth anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush, I chose the Yukon of 1896/97 to write about. Then, this year BWL, Inc has begun releasing the Canadian Historical Mysteries Collection with twelve mystery novels set in each of the Canadian provinces and territories. My novel, Sleuthing the Klondike, was published in April, 2023 and takes place in the summer of 1898.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?  I surfed the Internet and read many non-fiction books about the establishment of the town of Dawson City during the Klondike, and also checked to see what kind of clothes and hair styles were worn at the time and what food was brought in by boat for the stores to sell and the restaurants to serve. There was much more that I could have added and maybe I will have to write a fourth.

4. How long did you take to write the book?  I took part in the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November, 2022, and wrote the first 50,000 words during that month. Then it took another three months to complete the novel and do the editing.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? What is your Sun Sign?  I began my writing career with a short story, progressed to travel and historical articles, and then on to travel books. Between 1990 and 2000 I traveled through and researched the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, the territory of the Yukon, and the state of Alaska and wrote seven books them.

I called these books my Backroads series and in them I described what there is to see and do along their back roads. Once I was finished travelling I switched to fiction writing and have had five other mystery novels published besides Sleuthing the Klondike: ‘A Killer Match’ is the first in my Dating Coach Mystery Series with the second book, A Lethal Proposal being published in 2024; ‘Gold Fever’ is a stand-alone mystery/romance; andIllegally Dead’, ‘The Only Shadow In The House’, and ‘Whistler's Murder’ are three novels in my Travelling Detective Series.

I have also had two Canadian Historical novels for two young adults: West To The Bay and West to Grande Portage.and one holiday romance, The Twelve Dates of Christmas, (which was written with her sister Gwen Donaldson) published. Gwen and I we have a second holiday romance coming out in November, 2023, titled Single Bells.

I was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Since I love change, I have moved over thirty times in my life, living on acreages and farms and in small towns and cities throughout Alberta and B.C. After seventeen years on Vancouver Island I am now back in Edmonton.

I belong to Crime Writers of Canada and Writer’s Guild of Alberta.

I was born on April 21 so I am on the cusp of Aries and Taurus but I identify as a Taurus with some Aires traits.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one? Oh, I write in many different genres. I come up with an idea and write the story and then decided what genre it belongs in. But, since I love reading mystery novels, my favourite genre to write is mystery.

Diane Scott Lewis is visiting and talking about her latest release #BWLAuthor #MFRWAuthor #romance #World War 2 #German hero #British heroine

  1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

My just released novel (May 1st) takes place in 1941, in Brittany France under the German occupation. Outcast Artist in Bretagne (historical fiction/romantic suspense) tells the story of Norah, an Englishwoman trapped by the German invasion. She comes under the scrutiny of the German Commandant, August von Gottlieb, a man weary of war and detesting Hitler’s Policies. Together they discover a passion neither has experienced before. Can they destroy Hitler’s plans and flee to Switzerland?

2. Where did the idea arise? I watched a mini-series called Island at War, where the German commandant was a complex character who thought himself a civilized man. I modeled my Major von Gottlieb after him. A big challenge was how to make an (on the surface) anti-hero into a hero. Toss in a damaged heroine, an artist, determined to find a way home, and I had my protagonists.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing? I tried to stay on point. And there is always the desire to look at one thing more. I did a lot of on-line research, plus read an excellent book, Hitter’s Gateway to the Atlantic, by Lars Hellwinkell. I also did a virtual tour of a German submarine. I read the history of Brittany as well, to get the background for my Breton characters.

4. How long did you take to write the book? About a year. I was working on something else, but shelved it for later as this story took over.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing since I learned to write. I’ve always love to tell stories, throwing my characters into difficult situations and figuring out how they can succeed or overcome. I usually wrote historical stories. But I did write a contemporary murder mystery at age ten. What is your Sun Sign?  I’m a Libra, supposedly well balanced, but that isn’t me. I do like things to make sense, though they rarely do. In high school, my best friend (another Libra) and I wrote up a chart and characteristics of the different signs. It was fun.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one? I usually stick to historical fiction, but I’m currently working on a Young Adult novel with my granddaughter. Great fun. There’s also an historical aspect to the story.

Wednesday - Barbara White Daille #I'm Back #First in Series #Romances #westerns #new Daddies

I’m back! And today I’m doing a “first in series” sweep of some of my titles.

In yesterday’s post here at Eclectic Writer I chatted about the first book in the Flagman’s Folly series, A Rancher’s Pride. You’ll find more about the story—and me—if you take a peek at the post. Meanwhile, here’s the blurb again:

His Whole World Is In Her Hands

Sam Robertson’s life just changed. In one short day, he found out that he’s a daddy; that his beautiful little girl, Becky, is deaf; and that her aunt, sign language teacher Kayla Ward, intends to fight him for custody.

There are plenty of reasons Sam shouldn’t fall for Kayla. A city girl like her has no place on his ranch, particularly when she’s his ex-wife’s gorgeous sister. But thanks to the judge’s orders, Sam’s spending a lot of time with Kayla, trying to give Becky the stable home she’s never known.

Despite their ongoing custody battle, Sam and Kayla’s love for Becky brings them closer than they ever expected, and Sam knows that no matter who wins in court, he could still lose—Kayla or his daughter.

A guy like Cole Slater is hard to forget. Tina Sanchez should know—for years since high school she's tried to bury the pain of Cole's cruel betrayal. But it's impossible to ignore the man she sees reflected in her young son's eyes now that Cole is back in her life—and about to meet the child he never knew he had.

Returning home to New Mexico, Cole is determined to put his playboy reputation to rest. Especially now that he knows there's a little boy looking up to him. And seeing Tina again reignites all the feelings Cole ran from as a teen. Despite his fear that he can't be the man Tina deserves, he's determined to try. For his son's sake—and his own.

And for a little Christmas in July, here’s the cover blurb from the first of the two Snowflake Valley stories, Snowbound with Mr. Wrong:

Worst. Day. Ever. After Lyssa Barnett’s sister tricks her into reprising her role at Snowflake Valley's annual children's party, she doesn’t think anything can be worse than squeezing into her too-small elf costume. Then tall, dark, and way too handsome Nick Tavlock shows up to play Santa…and an unexpected storm leaves them snowbound in the isolated lodge.

The last thing Nick wants is to spend a cozy Christmas Eve with a trio of kids and the woman who dumped him. But as much as Lyssa frustrates him, he can't stop thinking about her. And soon, he's fighting very un-Santa-like thoughts of kissing a certain sexy Miss Elf under the mistletoe. As Nick starts to fall for Lyssa all over again, he knows it will take nothing short of a miracle to have Lyssa in his arms on Christmas Day.

Tuesday - Barbara White Daille Talking about a new release #MFRWAuthor #romance #rancher #Daughter #aunt

1. Tell me about your latest release or the book you wish to feature? Genre?

A Rancher’s Pride is a sweet, short contemporary romance set in a small Southwestern town. It originally stood alone, but the characters and setting drew readers in, and three other books followed, becoming the Flagman’s Folly series.

Confession time: I love all the books I’ve written, all the heroes and heroines and their relatives and friends, but have to admit A Rancher’s Pride holds a special place in my heart.

The story opens with a solitary rancher’s first meeting with the daughter he never knew he had. Sam immediately falls for four-year-old Becky, who should have been calling him “Daddy” long ago. The appearance of Becky’s beloved Aunt Kayla threatens his chances of getting custody as Becky has been deaf from birth, and while Kayla is a sign language teacher who helped raise her niece, Sam can’t communicate with his own child.

2. Where did the idea arise?

I’ve always loved books and knew I’d be a writer someday, and I’ve also always been fascinated by language. After receiving a degree in English, I went on for a second degree in American Sign Language, then settled down into a happy home in writing romance. A few books down the road, an idea came to me that blended all my interests.

When my hero, Sam, began speaking to me, it instantly became clear he was facing big trouble. See, thanks to a troubled past, he’s a loner and likes it that way. So to break him out of his shell, I knew somebody was going to have to break his heart.

3. How much research was involved? Did you stay on point or be distracted by wanting to look at just one more thing?

Not a lot of research with this book. I’d already studied American Sign Language and did use some of it throughout the story—and I still get reader mail about the puppy scene. ;-) But whether I’m looking at language or backstory or technical “stuff,” my goals are to make sure it’s important to the story, filter in the necessary details, and take care that it meshes smoothly into the plot.

4. How long did you take to write the book?

That’s hard to say as I was working simultaneously on another book and a separate proposal.  But this fell close to what my usual time frame had been, three months give or take, and then another month or so for final read-through and edits.

5. Now a bit about you. How long have you been writing?

Forever, I think! Really, I first started creating stories around the age of five, even though I couldn’t actually spell much of anything to write them down. My debut “published” short story was a limited edition of one, with an illustrated-by-author cover. This came out when I was in the fourth grade. Other stories followed, then in eighth grade I wrote my first full-length novel, a teen mystery with a romance subplot.

6. Do you write in a number of genres of stick to one?

I started out submitting short stories and was published in both mystery and romance. Now I’m focused on writing contemporary romance novels with sweet- to lower-sensuality levels. All my books are big on family, quirky characters, and small-town settings and values.
